Are directories a worthy project?

I have owned a few directories in my day, but I'm wondering if they are a bit pointless nowadays. It seems like everybody owns one now and that the only people visiting them are webmasters hoping to get listed. Am I totally off base? Are they still worth the time and effort to set-up and oversee?

If you get a decent-pr directory you can make some nice money from ppl submitting listings, but thats the main reason i believe. people just want PR.

I've never even bothered really submitting my sites in directories, unless they were owned by friends.

Did anyone ever learn why they went after directories or is it still one of the great Google mysteries?

I have never had to deal with website directories. They must suck.

Is this google bannin thng fact? There is still advice that says submit to directories or else...

It's a fact, Google banned a ton of directories that were pretty much a direct copy of DMOZ's content. It's more of a banning due to duplicate content, not because of the fact that they were directories.
