a hyphen kills any domain
Im gonna jump in here with a question.

As far as SEO go's a url that uses hyphens is supposed to be better than a long streach out phrase. So wouldnt it also make sense that a domain that uses a hyphen be more SE friendly?

Say

heavymetal.com

wouldnt heavy-metal.com be more SE friendly and be more easily picked up for the keywords "heavy metal?"

Yes, hyphens are SE friendly. But for people, hyphens are a pain in the arse.

If you were looking for info on heavy metal, what would you type in heavy-metal.com, or heavymetal.com?

"heavy metal" in a SE.

I think its tough for an SE to decifer the two kewords out of a domain heavymetal, but I know google for sure uses the hyphen to seperate and decifer information in a url.

From a human stand point I can see, but I think most people in most situations use SE's to find sites anyway, so I geuss it would be more of a matter of how you plan on bringing traffic into a site.

Time a search engine will have trouble with a domain that has multiple words is if there could be multiple interpretations. The common example is expertsexchange.com. It's supposed to be experts exchange but could be seen as expert sex change.

So, are hyphens usefull in domains. My guess is absolutely not since for search engines, there's way more to think about than the domain name. Your domain name is important more for branding and for humans, not search engines.

Then you are totally wrong. New "undiscovered" keywords are a perfect example. I got a domain name once with no other domain with the keyword in it. There were some pages anyway about the subject with a pagerank of 2. But BOOM! my domain got the #1 SERP position in google and thereafter it was like changing places with one of the pagerank 2 sites. I had no inbound links at all, and it was just a kinda 1 page domain, as it needed registration and login for more access.
