Land lines is mostly for business and old people. Even poor people in remote parts of India and Vietnam are using cellphones (albeit, its 12 years old cells with green and black screens)

Keeping your cell phone with you on with you all the time is another question ...

Get magic jack, they provide a great service. Plus, you can get some affiliate commission off yourself .

For people who use RingCentral, do you use the recommended Polycom phones? Can you use any old regular phone with an adapter or do you need an IP phone?

I'm using the Polycom phones from them. They come pre-programmed and are tied to your local number. I don't think you can use just any phone.
