Anyone got their parents into working online?

Wondering if any of you have experience in this..

Mother is a long long way from retiring but she is slowly becoming incapable of going to work (she currently has a typical office job) so she's spending a lot of time doing fck all at home.

I see this as a good opportunity for her to make a bit of pocket money doing crap online, blogging maybe? Really i want her to get a hobby / interest as otherwise her brain is going to melt and she'll turn into a walking vegetable.

The issue is, i dont really know if older people can really get into it.. so i dont want to get her hopes up but i hate to watch her sitting around at home all day watching shitty daytime tv.

Has anyone else been in a similar position? What would you suggest if you were in my position or should i give up hope and leave her to it?

I'm pretty sure she'd give something a shot as long as it was enjoyable and had some chance of making more than indian wages.

It's something I've thought about, as both my parents are nearing "retirement age" and work physical jobs. My mom had a great career but became ill due to some malpractice-type stuff after my younger brother was born. She was pretty much disabled/early medically retired, but that didn't hold up. So she went back to physical work she was doing previously. My Dad is the type with a strong work ethic and very smart, but he has very low risk tolerance. He'd rather just go about his work diligently and cash checks.

The "more than indian wages" comes into play in my situation, because there are a lot of things I could suggest that aren't going to guarantee anything more than that, if that. And older people tend to value predictable security.

Both my parents are at least online- My mom has a smartphone, does social media, plays games, posts pics of her garden, and shit like that- so I'm sure she could do some blogging and whatever else.

I've had a hard time convincing friends of my own age cohort to really get into online business, even at points in time when I had a pretty solid blueprint for them. I've also seen plenty of people online who claimed to be very into and motivated to succeed in some online marketing venture, basically have their hand held and not do shit.

Parents' generation: Hell, I have in-laws. They are still of the mindset that anyone with a high school diploma can walk into any business, get an entry level job, work up to management, and retire after 30 years with defined-benefit pension and lifetime medical, and never worry about a thing. So they can't understand anyone who doesn't. Those who don't go that route tend to ride a lower-tier parallel one (work 40+ years in whatever and make it to Social Security).

I think my best bet with my parents is waiting until they actual do retire and need something to do to supplement their income. At that point, collecting Social Security and doing some blogging/whatever will probably be marginally preferable to being a part-time greeter at Home Depot or whatever else they can do. If they can't physically work before then, my parents would probably give things a try but their nature is always going to be to look for some predictable employment situation even if they are too broken down.

It sounds like your mother isn't doing anything else, so it might be easier to at least ease her into something. Maybe get her into to blogging/Pinterest/something like that related to something that interests her, as a hobby primarily, with the bonus opportunity of making a little money. Otherwise, if it's strictly blogging for dollars, she might prefer to watch The Price is Right if the returns don't seem tangible and immediate.

Good Luck.

I made my mum the "Finance Director" of my company. Keeps her busy and feeling important.
She handles the accounting staff etc.
She's happy and hence stays out of my way...so I'm a happy clam as well.

Got my mom working 18 hour shifts making YouTube accounts for $4/hr. Shes 87 with dementia so she doesn't even know what the real minimum wage is. $4 makes her quite happy and cheerful.

Got my dad creating Gmail.com accounts so I can spam CPA Network offers from them. He can make about 6 verified accounts an hour and working in 12 hours shifts. I pay him $105 a week.

Both are happy and enjoy the income. I made them plant a garden outside and plan on paying them even less when they can fully grow 100% of their monthly meals.

Cheers and GL OP !

Are you aware that there are people in this world that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother for instance is one of those people. She is a truck driver that has bad knees and a bad back from driving the truck but you probably do not care about that case either. Oh well I am not one of those people I am 6'4" 245lbs and I exercise every day. I would love to see you say something like to my mother in front of me. Probably never happen though you are probably just an internet tough guy. I doubt very seriously you would say that to someones face. Just my thought. What do you think. Oh I am sorry you probably do not have a brain. I on the other hand will be happy to buy you a plane ticket to come here and see if you have the nerve to say that to someone I know.

I'm 55 and working full time in SEO, I can't get my sons interested in anything but surfing, and they're in their 30's. Works both ways.

You do realise his post was a joke right? And did you really feel the need to point out the fact you at 6'X'' and 2/3XX Lbs and work out daily? Just because you are heavy and tall and you work out, does not mean you are strong or you have fighting capabilities.

You don't talk to rusivk like that. He takes shit from no one, including some smiley faced (o,O) jerk who severely lacks respect for his parents by treating them that way and abusing their relationship.

My old man has been hustling for 20+ years on the side... buying & re-selling goods. Now with this internet stuff anything he can't sell local quick goes on Craigslist or eBay. He does alright

heh, my mom blogging. That gave me a chuckle. :)

I got her setup with Facebook one day. 10 minutes later she was all flustered and disgusted by it, and made me delete her account.

My mom does my accounting (it's her day job,) and both her and my father have asked me to 'show them the ropes' but it doesn't seem very practical to me lol

One good tip - don't give them a lunch break.

I did few experiments and learned aged parents work the best uninterrupted.

Me: "Here you go, your new Facebook account"

Mom: "Well, I don't know if I like this."

... 5 mins later ...

Mom: "No, this thing sucks. Take me off! I don't want everyone knowing everything I do!"

Me: "But mom, they only know what you tell them"

Mom: "But look! I can see Angie had pancakes for breakfast, Teresa watched a movie, and Leslie went to the fitness center. This is fucking retarded! Take it off!"

Me: "Ok"

lol
