Anyone else in Bangkok right now?

After the killing of about 65 people and at least a thousand injured, both sides, the red shirts have "given up to prevent more bloodshed".

But, although that was yesterday, since then some group in the north torched their own government buildings and Channel 3 in Bangkok was set on fire (perhaps by its proclaimed red shirt owner) and is now off the air.

The red shirt headquarters was in the middle of the business district and high end hotels and shopping centers and the leaders were in the center of thousands of protesters so the army and police just couldn't get to them. The Canada and US embassies have been closed for days now because their locations are part of the rally point of red shirts. A hotel was set afire and closed and the mall had to close.

The government now stands ready for criticism of letting this go on way too long. Many have said that other countries might have tolerated this revolt for a week then clear them out. And I think, in anybody's book, two months is too long. Even the red shirt tactics were disgusting down to the last when they put up their own children as human shields.

Before this happened it seemed everybody was taking swipes at the government but what the red shirts have done is polarize the rest including many from the loyal opposition to come out for the government.

It all comes down to election vote buying. And the fact that this wasn't a true revolt more of a mercenary one because Thaksin and his rich local supporters were paying the revolutionaries to be there. At first they were being paid daily but as it dragged on the rumor is that they were coerced to stay because now they would only pay them monthly. For many, what started out as free money soon became a nightmare.

There's much more coming in the aftermath of this. I've heard a few suggest that if these guys want to be symbolic and set fires, perhaps someone might find it in their heart of hearts to torch Thaksin's fab multimillion $ not baht Bangkok home.

The aftershocks will continue and so far have hit old and new international business and tourism to the tune of big baht. A new election will be called and hopefully a crackdown on vote buying at all levels.

Protests turn deadly in Thailand - The Big Picture - Boston.com

Markus and battlefork have the story right. I lived in Thailand for the first 24 years of my life. We don't want the red shirts in Bangkok and we don't want them to represent our country to the world as they have. They are controlled by the ousted and corrupted former Prime Minister Thaksin. I hope the situation is resolved quickly. But I blame our government for being a weak sauce to not handle the situation when they should have.

Hmm not sure if it's been said I haven't seen but why are they protesting?

They're protesting because they want Toxin sins-a-lot to be granted amnesty and return to power in Thailand.

This never was about democracy. The red shits were offered dissolution and new elections which they turned down. Toxin bought all the votes from these idiots for 500 Baht a piece many years ago. He then used his position to make insane amounts of money illegally. Screw the red shits with their Vote buying, Terrorism, Looting, and violence. Sadly though, its not going to stop until someone corks Thaksin.

The huge amount of damage the red shits have done to Thailand will take a long time to be repaired. Central world alone is estimated at 47 million dollars/year in sales. The tourism industry which Thailand relies on so heavily has been devastated. Huge numbers of jobs have been lost, businesses destroyed and meanwhile Toxin is shopping in Hong Kong.

Sad days in the LOS.

first, that white guy in the first video is a jackass, and so is everyone else busting shit up at random.... then the 3rd video, maybe there was something more to it, maybe there was a reason they kicked their ass, but i cant bring myself to give any red shirts the benefit of the doubt
