Basically, doing the "trick" of making images look like they're associated with the ads isn't allowed, even if you have a little line between them or something. It seems this would disallow the i-geek type layouts a lot of people are using for arbi.
It's probably still a good idea to put images near ads because they draw the eye into the right general area of the page. I think my stupid ebook is probably a good example of compliant placement, because (a) the image subjects are unrelated to the ads, and (b) the 4 images are lined up with the 4 text blurbs on the right and not the 5 ads on the left, so it's unambiguous which of those two they're associated with.
That might be a placement strategy to try for those of you who need to modify your current layouts. Hope this helps.
