A few questions about article marketing

So I'm trying to get a start in article marketing/basic SEO, since I have a lot of time but not a lot of money. I have a few questions.

First of all, what types of niches should I target, or what types of products should I promote? Obviously, there's no way I can target the niches that you find on affiliate networks (insurance, dating etc) since those have been SEO'd to death and then some. I need smaller, less common niches with less competition so I have a chance of ranking, and the only thing that's coming to mind is ebooks about whatever topics, or physical products. I've browsed through Clickbank and there are plenty of markets with less competition, but am I really limited to just ebooks/CPS? Are there no CPA offers that can be promoted through article marketing?

Second, and a potentially dumb question, is buying a directory submission here the same as submitting the article to Ezine/Goarticles/etc? I know there are a billion article submitter programs out there; is there a "best" one or are they all the same? Can Ubot do that? (Even dumber question.)

What's a decent spinner program/tool?

How do you track which article/keyword a conversion comes from with article marketing? I know how to do it with Prosper and PPC ads, but am unsure about article marketing/SEO.

You need to start by focusing on a niche that interests you. Think about what you like, what your hobbies are, etc. Remember, you won't just be selling products in your niche - you'll also be promoting the heck out of your site, creating fresh content for your site, writing articles for directories, participating on related forums. That's why it's so important to find something you're passionate about.

And, you certainly aren't limited to ebooks. There are plenty of smaller markets out there that offer all sorts of products. Once you pick a niche, you can find a product that you think you can sell.

You can automate your article submissions. Just make sure that you're following every directory's terms of service first. Some can be pickier than others, and you don't want a mistake in your automation to land you in hot water with a directory.

And, if you have Google Analytics, it will tell you exactly where your traffic is coming from - whether it's an article directory, organic search, a PPC ad, etc. Plus, EZA also has a stats area that will tell you how many clicks you've gotten from each article.
