18 cases of firearms being used for self defense this week

I have never owned a gun in my life although I believe in the right to arm yourself. I also had been single until the age of 45 and I had always felt confident in the ability to deal with scenarios coming from new york.

now that I have a family that has changed and now own a few guns and am license to carry.

so to protect the family was my main reason I became an active owner.

Gun owners should stop being defensive about this issue. Why are you trying to justify why you should be able to own a gun when it's the anti-gun people who want to initiate aggression against you for nothing more than owning a gun? They are overt in advocating violence. Any violence you might commit is just speculation on their part. I'm not scared of someone for just owning a gun, but I'm terrified of people who put their trust in government.

I think I saw a guy do that once at Ocean Beach.

For real though, one of the craziest things I saw in SD was a sword fight in OB. Seriously saw a bum fight with swords. One dude had a trash-can shield.

They were literally dueling to the death. I was watching from the pier, they ended up running away because a beach cop happened to be nearby.

I see a toothless guy with a sword who gives zero fucks, I want a gun on me.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Maybe the moral is to not live in those places. I live in London and about the only time I hadn't felt safe was walking home from drinking at 3am in certain areas of town but I don't do that anymore.

No one here worries about needing a gun. And if you don't belong or mess with a gang most likely won't get knifed either.

I have a much bigger fear of getting run over from a bus than anything.

I remember :)

I've lived in the neighborhood for over 5 years now, seen fights, talked to cops, had drunk people walk into my house thinking it was someone else's...I've never once though "wow, I would be so much safer with a gun right now". Maybe it's because I'm a pretty big guy and have even bigger friends, maybe I'm not cautious enough, idk. I just focus on much more stressful and immediate threats in my life like business and family.
WHAT?? dude america wouldnt be what it is if the white people werent afraid of threats that didnt exist!

The reason for the post is that for the most part, the average American doesn't realize that self defense cases involving firearms happen every day.

The national news to my knowledge has NEVER reported a case of self defense. However they're more than willing to run a tragedy 24/7 for 3 or 4 weeks without an issue.

FBI Data states that for every certified report of a firearms self defense that there's another 20 or so that remain unreported.

Personally, I've had several instances where I was quite glad I was carrying a firearm, and several instances where I wish I had it on me. As of yet I haven't said to myself *Boy I really wish I didn't have a gun on me*.

Home invasions are becoming much more common, and as it stands having a firearm in your house and being trained to use it is the only practical way to stop it. Police response times are too long for them to have any effect, same with alarms and all the 'traditional' methods.

I lived 5 minutes from the beach in one of the most beautiful (and expensive) places in the country.

The place I was talking about is a really popular spot in the city for shopping, nightlife and surfing, etc. It can be a violent place, but it's not like I was walking around in the ghetto.

Pacific Beach, where I lived, is also one of the more popular parts of the city for the same reasons. It's also overran with crazy homeless people and drunk idiots causing problems.

I didn't walk around worried about getting shot up by gang members, but there are gangs there (and pretty much every major city) and running into them is always a possibility.

But I'd venture to guess it's probably as safe or safer than London.

I don't walk around terrified of crime. Chances are I'll never be in a situation again where I need to defend myself or use a gun. What I'm afraid of is my Government taking away my right to do so.

No one is advocating "getting rid" of guns. They're advocating taking the right to own them away from one group of people and giving the monopoly on using them to another.

My Grandmother lives in one of the nicest/safest parts of my town. It's probably one of the safest neighborhoods in the world.

A few months ago someone broke into an elderly couples house 4 houses up the street from where she lives, robbed them and beat them to death with a pipe.

It's not about being afraid of anything.

It's about being aware of threats that do exist and being able to defend yourself.

I wouldn't say a gun is the only the defense against home invasions. You could build a moat around your house.

Then what options are there? Police are typically pretty slow to respond, alarm systems can be disarmed.

Even if police do show up, you can end up in a situation like was seen in Cheshire CT.

About a year ago, I called 911 in Los Angeles to report a car accident. It was about 3am on a Friday. I had to press 1 to speak English and then was put on hold and had to wait for a couple minutes. Imagine if some pyscho was coming at me. My 9mm always answers on first ring and doesn't require me to punch 1 to speak English.

I'm increasingly coming to conclusion the gun debate is a distraction. The question I'd like answered is - why are you all so keen on killing each other as a nation? It's clearly not guns, as the stats from other countries show.

I've lived in both Birmingham and London our two biggest cities, and I've only ever heard of ONE home invasion in 35 years (talking about friends-of-friends-of-friends, not shit you hear on the news), and that was a guy who was openly selling weed and lived in a really, really shitty area.

Not saying that Britain is a peaceful utopia - I wouldn't walk down most high streets at pub closing time for fear of getting glassed by a drunken moron - but home invasions are a whole other ballgame.

Well I'm not really keen on killing anyone. We have the most strict drug laws here and that's probably one huge factor. Drug laws = gang violence.

Maybe another factor is if you consider how children are largely reflections of their parents. It might not be far fetched to draw that same parallel of how a nations citizens might be reflective of their government. And if you consider the US government is one of the most offensive and destructive forces in the world ...

Guns will Always be available to people (criminals) that Really want them. Just like weed, coke, heroin, meth, bootleg DVD's, pirated software, and sex with strange women for cash: we all know this.

that is all

Average of 6307 non fatal gunshot injuries and 2539 fatalities resulting from gunshots (including suicides) per week in the country.

Seems weird to quote small numbers of good people protecting themselves against bad guys when it is so small compared to the huge overall effect of having a lot of guns around.
