It's the same old never ending argument, but anyway...
I had a guy from New York come into my store one day, an insurance company brought him over here to fix hail damaged cars. He said "it's great here, you can walk into dark alleys and instead of being mugged you find a nice café or a bar".
Yeah, we're not going to convince each other of anything.
NYC has amongst the strictest gun control laws in the US. Yet it's still full of violent criminals. Same with Chicago. Anyway, different cultures. I'm sure I'd enjoy visiting Australia too. And I'd feel perfectly safe there without a gun.
The biggest problem we have here are potentially violent drunks. You're right though, how am I meant to defend myself without shooting them in the face?
We have violent drunks here too. 99% of the time I leave my gun at home (I can legally carry), I'd never have it on me when I'm drinking. Your best defense is probably avoiding the potentially violent ones and staying in safe/well lit areas.
I've had to point guns at people. It's not fun. I'm not proud of it and I wouldn't do it unless absolutely necessary (mostly military, a couple of times at home).
Luckily, I've never had to pull the trigger. In every experience I've had the gun acts as a deterrent. A very powerful one.
If I was forced to walk through a dangerous area at night I'd rather have an unloaded gun on my side than a knife or a bat. I'd bet my safety that just brandishing the weapon is more likely to deter a criminal from attacking me - and keep me safer - than having to deal with an escalation of violence.
But that's not the only reason.
For one, I believe it's not just a "right", but an obligation to protect yourself and your loved ones, and to do that you need the means to do so.
For two, it's effectively saying let's take away the power of people to defend themselves and give that power exclusively to the group of people who are most likely - as history proves time and time again - to abuse it and use it to hurt and kill innocent people - who can't defend themselves.
And no, if my Government (or other powerful group) ever attacks me I don't expect to fight them off with a gun. But the fact that they're facing an armed public is a major deterrent for them to even think about doing so in the first place.
Some people act like that's an irrational point of view. It's fucking history, over and over again.

People act like those who would like to have guns are fanatics. The reality is, most gun owners I know hope that they're never in a situation where they have to use one. I'd much rather own a gun I never have to use than wish I had one when I do need it.
