Did anyone here get a flu shot this year or are you guys on the vitamin D train?

For awhile, I've been getting 500 IUs of Vitamin D with my multivitamin but I'm gonna start upping it to 5000 IUs this week after getting a doctor's okay.

Has anyone who started taking high levels of Vitamin D notice any difference when beginning the regiment or over time?

When you think about it, you're getting 5000 IUs of vitamin D when you lay out in the sun during the summer for 5-10 minutes. Lifeguards do this every day. So how the hell can the healthcare industry recommend 400 IUs/day as the upper limit? It doesn't make sense.

Here's a good article I read on the subject. Long, but worth it.

Why was it 'worth it'? The guy is a antivac nut bag. "Mercury in vaccines has also been implicated as a cause of autism. "

What a moron. Fucking sick of people who think their ignorance on a subject is as valid as the science behind that subject.

And anecdotal quotes from random people about things like Guillain-Barré and how they got it from the flu vaccine are just insane. Unless you got the flu shot in 1976, you didn't get Guillain-Barré from it.

"Human breast milk does not contain vitamin D..."

Wrong.

"Can a shot (or tablets) of vitamin D prevent influenza better than a flu shot? There is good reason to believe that it can."

And then no studies showing this. What a piece of work.

Selective citation should always be a red flag.

Recommended daily values for vitamins are not for super performance or super health; in fact, the recommended daily values are for disease prevention. So, if you don't want scurvy, get your recommended daily value of Vitamin C. Same with Vitamin D and whatever diseases it prevents.

However, more of some vitamins might be bad. See JAMA Network | JAMA | Vitamin E and the Risk of Prostate Cancer: GAYThe Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT). I think the real key is everything in moderation and your first line of defense should be a healthy diet with lots of veggies.

I've taken 5,000 UI of Vitamin D3/day for the past year so thats safe IMO. I'm also a vampire so I don't get much sun, hence why I take it.

If anyone wants to talk to someone who already caught the flu the old-fashioned way in 2014 and is only now coming back to his appetite and senses, then feel free to pepper me with questions. I'll be here all ... year.

I take it with vit. C. I read on a wall somewhere it should be taken with the C.

My daughter does the same thing and is wayy less sick.

Flu vaccine will give you the flu. Your way better off taking your chances

I take Vitamin D almost every day (400 IU) and I'm just recovering from some nasty ass flu. I suppose that's not enough, though?

Flu is a virus, so exposure to the virus increases your chances of infection. You can minimize exposure by staying in the basement, or living somewhere where people aren't crammed in like rats in a cage. <Limited exposure = reduced infection>

Vitamin D is synthesized by exposure to the sun, if you live in a place where you don't have much sun in winter, perhaps some supplements would be helpful.

Shots, vitamin overdose, whatever works. I don't believe anyone has real hard facts on what will 100% prevent viral infection.

I don't think Vitamin D is enough to prevent the flu or common cold. I like a more multi-facetted approach. I take high Dose Vitamin D but also other anti-viral and bacterial herbs such as Turmeric extract and Ginger. Excercise and Hot/Cold Showers also strengthen the immune system. Then, hygiene goes a long way as well. I'm not telling that you all stink, but washing your hands all the time, especially after taking public transport is important. Don't put your hands to your face either, don't just grab that bagle with your germ ladden hands - be cautious, don't get too close to infected people.

Short: Minimize germ contact and kill the germs you have contracted as quickly as possible! Once a full blown immune response sets in, you will feel like shit - so help your body in every way possible to keep infections as small as possible!
