The thing is most of mexico's murders are in a small geographic region. That' what makes it scary.
And most are against rival cartels and crooked gov officials. There is a new gang, the zetas, which are operating differently that the traidional cartels. The traditional cartels had of kind of unnofficial pact, or "unspoken understanding" of sorts with authorities (kind of like narcs here with CIs). Authorities looked the other way on the drugs and guns, and the cartels would step in mob-like to take care of the petty criminals and help keep order on the streets to avoid bringing attention to the areas.
When the zetas broke off from their fomer employer the gulf cartel, they turned against the people with extortion, kidnapping, etc mostly because they were enforcers and not traffickers. so now, since bitches gotta eat, they are the ones causing all this shit. So much so they have the traditional cartels aligned to get them and go back to the way it was. they let them get too big thinking the unspoken pact would be respected but these guys went from trafficking business men to all out criminals, and thus the violence problem.

You all know of course that if you are buying illegal drugs you are supporting this. Sure, the war on drugs is a joke and legalizing drugs in the U.S. would make this problem dissolve. But until then if you are helping to create the market for it then you are partially responsible. You can argue otherwise and say how it's your own choice and a victimless crime, but without your cash along with millions of others this stuff wouldn't be happening. Just saying.

It's definitely not all of Mexico. It's mainly the area along the entire US border, into about 100 miles of Mexico.
