Whats your monitors refresh rate?

I just got a brand new Asus 24" monitor .. it's amazing, but i have it hooked up to my shitty 14" hp w/ a VGA cable, my refresh rate is at 60hz and my monitor has like jumpy lines on it...

so i'm thinkin its either the refresh rate or vga cable ... my resolution is at 1080p too ... what do u guys have it set at?

btw i can't change it from 60hz

I had the same problem with my 22" monitor hooked to my HP laptop via VGA. I got a thicker VGA cable and that fixed it quite a bit, but I can still notice a small flicker on darker backgrounds. I'm pretty sure all VGA LCDs are 60hz on the refresh.
 
You just need a DVI cable. LCDs look like crap hooked up though VGA.

I used to have my dual monitors hooked up with one of each cable before upgrading to a Dual DVI graphics card. The one on the VGA cable always looked blurry compared to the one on the DVI cable.

what about a vga to dvi convertor? my laptop doesn't have a dvi port

its clear and crisp ... but its flickering like the VGA isn't properly connecting or something
 
Your cable could be failing. Its amazing when they go out. I dont know how some factories can fuck up like 25 solders but they do.

Try swapping a cable from something else. It could be your laptop has a crappy VGA out as well.
 
All LCD monitors are 60hz (unless they are the new 3D monitors which are 120hz), but it's pretty much irrelevant because they don't work like CRT displays. The figure you need to pay attention to is the pixel refresh rate which should ideally be 6ms or less for things like smooth video playback and gaming.

VGA into an LCD is gay. Graphics, especially fonts, won't be nearly as crisp, colours won't be as accurate, and you'll get weird banding and ghosting.

You need DVI (or HDMI I guess), and a video card that supports that which is pretty much every card made in the last 5 or 6 years. If you don't have a DVI out go buy a new video card. You don't have to spend a lot, even $30 or $40 will get you a decent enough card with a DVI (or two) on it.

For optimum clarity you also need to run your LCD in it's native resolution, which is the maximum resolution that it supports. Anything other resolution will be fuzzy.

Ah, edit: Miss read the part about it being hooked up to a laptop. Yeah, double check that your cable isn't fucked and make sure it's well shielded I guess. Is there any other video out on the laptop?

VGA isn't digital, so you would likely see an improvement with a digital connection. I ran into the same thing with my laptop when I wanted to hook it up to my plasma TV. I found monoprice.com which is awesome, but decided the digital converters weren't really worth the novelty of computing on a 42" tv.

Might be worth a look?


Seriously, though, Monoprice FTW. I just bought a second 23" monitor, and got a dual mount from there for $50 shipped.
 
The same thing happened to me with my brand new monitor. The reason wasn’t the vga cable, but the fact that both of my notebook and monitor were plugged in the same socket with ground, creating a continuous electron loop, causing my monitor image to flicker. (Took me a while to figure that out lol)

Does your monitor still flickers when the laptop is running on battery power?

Have you tried plugging both the pc and monitor in different sockets or not plugging one of them with ground?

holy shit, this is definately the problem man, it works fine when i use battery power on my notebook. how did you fix this?
