Looked at another thread on here about media centers(?), but need more specific advice as to external hds. I want to give my brother and sister each a hd and I'm going to put some of my movie collection on them too. Looking for $125 or less each. Larger than 250gb would be good.

Here are two I'm looking at:
Newegg.com - Fantom Drives GreenDrive II 1TB USB 2.0 / eSATA External Hard Drive with NTI Shadow 4 Backup Software GDII1000EU - External Hard Drives
Newegg.com - Western Digital Elements 640GB USB 2.0 Midnight Black Portable Hard Drive WDBAAR6400ABK-NESN - External Hard Drives

I don't want to get a shit one that is going to overheat or be slow as fuck, but I've never had an external hd so I wouldn't know what from what anyways.

If there is a better solution that involves internal hds with a casing please link me to both an hd and casing.

I like the idea of USB powered then it could be used on the road by my brother who is a truck driver. Usually he'll have somewhere to plugin his laptop though.

If the two I listed above are decent which should I go with. I'm leaning towards Fantom.

circa, circa, Muhammad, jihad.

when it comes to hdd's your'e going to get a lot of different answers because its really all about brand preference, not so much about specs. I personally always go with western digital because i still have all my old western digital drives from like 95 and out of the hundreds i've gone through the years i'm yet to have one fail.

Got this for 60 bucks on black friday. Have yet to hook it up yet, been in the box collecting dust :x

The main one I like is a Western Digital Essential, which has USB2, FW400 and eSATA hookups. On my 13.3 macbook I always use it via the FW400 port which has proven to be faster than USB2.0 (despite 480mbit), and a lot less cpu intensive during backup work. If I had a MBP with an express slot, I would be using the eSATA connection.

I guess the point is , if I were to buy another external, I dunno if I could handle have one that only had the option of USB.

+1 WD again, I have some 300mb harddrives from my first PC's that still boot up.. Doesn't really matter what you go with, just backup your shit in 3 different places and 2 different locations and you'll be ok.

yep all about brand/experience. I've had a horrible experience with WD. last 3 HD's were western digital and they all failed within 2-3 years. Then again... 2-3 years is decent I guess.
