Classical music, anyone?

I can't find any video at all of Medea's Dance of Vengeance as played by an orchestra (well, there's one, but it's so far under tempo it's unrecognizable), so it's up to iTunes for that one. The only ensemble I can find:

It's very very VERY close to the original.

I listen to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on a loop anytime I'm scheming to take over the world.

Does anybody actually play piano here? Without tooting my own horn (I only started 2 years ago, so got a late start in life), I can play as of right now Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (1st Movement), Beethoven's "Sonata Pathetique" (movement 1 (50% done), Movement 2 (100%))... Fur Elise, and Mozart's Sonata Facile (easy sonata). Play a little Bach as well, small stuff he wrote for his wife.

Moonlight Sonata IMO is one of the most powerful expressions ever made. I never get tired of hearing it, and when playing it, it's amazing how your own mood affects how it sounds (slightly fast, or drawn out and powerful).

I can't handle much traditional classical music .. moms played the piano growing up so I had my fill early on.

I've plugged String Quartet Tribute a few times on this forum, even linked to a torrent that's got most everything they've done. I totally dig listening to their stuff because it's my style of music put to classic.

Some examples of their awesomeness

Not SQT but one of the greatest song ever made put to classical

Sorry for posting so many videos but how could you not like their stuff? SQT is a pretty good bridge to classical for most, they completely satisfy my need when I get in the mood

I can play some stuff by ear but I can't read. It's on the bucket list to go back and learn to read piano music. I figure if I can find a music teacher that will teach me with either the really cool classical piano concertos or the modern pop music (by modern I mean the beatles and such) then either way I will be interested enough to stick with it this time. I think the main problem, when I was learning as a kid, was I would get stuck with really boring piano music written in the 1920's.

Oh and if anyone knows some good streaming (free) classical piano stations please share.

EDIT: Mozarts Turkish Rondo is one of my all time favorites:

Srsly though, Mozart is my favorite composer. I like to listen to classical music when I'm brainstorming. Seems to help keep my thoughts very fluid.

A little OT here, but for some reason, I seem to cook better meals while I listen to Jazz. Smooth Jazz like this especially.

I was in an orchestra for 4 years, 2nd horn, tough to pick a favorite. I don't like string chamber ensemble music. Just the way it's written is anticlimactic. I have to separate my favorites by generation.

You want some powerful modern classical? Listen to these:

Symphony no. 10 mvt #2 by Dmitri Shostakovich. This just makes me want to cockpunch someone, seriously. This was "get crunk music" before crunk existed.

The Pines of Rome by Ottorino Respighi. The brass in the 4th movement is unbelievable, and the fact that he wrote it for extra brass to be in the balcony to be one of the first true "surround sound" experiences.

Medea's Dance of Vengeance by Samuel Barber. This is one of the most pissed off pieces of music you will ever hear, but so powerful.

The Planets Suite by Gustav Holst. One for each (except Pluto!). Mars and Jupiter have reached pops-level status, but all are worth a listen. Mars has that pulsating 5/4 tempo, warlike feel, in drastic contrast to Jupiter's happy themes and beautiful chorale.

As for the Romantic era..

Symphony no. 5 by Tchaikovsky. Did you know he used this symphony to come out of the closet? Yeah, using music to admit you're gay. I'm biased though, it has one of the best horn solos of all time in a major piece, and it's like an emotional rollercoaster for 50 minutes. Glenn Miller of the big band era used the melody of the horn solo in one of his jazzy pieces, as well. I performed this symphony this past April.

Requiem Mass by Giuseppe Verdi. Oh God yes. Listen to this on full blast on some good speakers. This is how I want my funeral to be. This piece was actually written for the funeral of Gioacchino Rossini, the man who composed the William Tell Overture.

Nice to know there are other brass players on this board. I am a trombonist and I second your recommendation for every one of these recordings. I also enjoy Giovanni Gabrieli brass ensembles. Recordings from major symphony orchestras are important to me, such as Carl Nielsen performed by San Francisco, and Brahms Symphony No.2 performed by Chicago, and too many others to list individually.

Guess now is as good a time as any to amend my signature line.

happy to know that my old friend!.. playing an instrument is a liberating experience. Nothing will calm and relax you more, I guarantee it!

Or pump you up. Playing can be relaxing, or I can get downright into the music and after I finish it want to throw my horn down and shout "FUCK YEAH". But then I realize it's a several thousand dollar musical instrument and logic prevails.

Yes sir, I played mello. You?

Mello as well. Auditioned for Crown 2007, didn't march because I was broke at the time, though on the audition sheet I got straight 1's. Now I write high school shows for fun. Still have a mellophone sitting in my closet next to my concert horn (and a marching snare in my car I've been too lazy to bring inside)
