My house was burglarized last night. Suggestion for webcam security?

If nothing else was disturbed then you can be pretty sure it was someone who knew where the cash was, but that doesn't mean a "normal" burglar would not have found it.

People who rob homes professionally will find your valuables, places you think are safe probably aren't.

It's still just a show, but Discovery Channel :: It Takes a Thief

Your hiding places will fool casual thieves, but not someone who's job is to find your shit. It's like cloaking a web page, normal visitors won't notice, but there are people on this forum that would spot it easy.

A fiends brother woke one night to his two dobermans barking. He went downstairs to find them sitting in front of a very frightened burglar. He told the guy he was going to call the police and he might want to stay very still.

Seriously? The smart people hide them well and have more than one and are watching and recording remotely. Think about it.

Remember this video from last week?

i agree watching remotely gives you some way to try and figure out the fucker's identity and bring in the police as fast as you can. i'd much rather have a thief break into my home and get recorded doing it than use alarms and dogs as a deterrent. so he gets scared away, they're rarely caught after that, then what, now you live with the fact that a douche bag out there tried to rob you.

The cop that came by last night said the same thing - he has never caught a thief because a home alarm went off. He said that the alarm takes a few seconds to go off, then the alarm company calls you, and you have to confirm whether it was a false alarm, then they call the cops, and then the cops may take another 5-10 mins to get there - and in the meantime, the thief is already gone.

Cameras I think are probably the best way to catch the fuckers.

The fucker knew exactly where I stashed my cash, and that's all that was taken. Came in from the backyard, via an unlocked window when we weren't home. I live in a pretty nice neighborhood, so I am guessing its not some random burglar taking a chance or a neighbor. Thinking its someone we know, that knew that the window should be open, and exactly where the cash in my master bedroom is kept.

So now I am looking for a web based camera monitoring system -
1. that is recordable
2. motion sensor based
3. can handle multiple cameras

Any suggestions on the security camera system?

Hey
Or just do an alarm system and get a german shepherd, exactly what I have and much better than a security camera system.

I am headed to this spy store in town later to see what they recommend as far as setting up wifi webcams.

Be very interested to see what gear you get from the spy shop. Have been contemplating going down this route for a while now.

we just kind of debunked that.

no security consultant in the world is going to recommend an alarm and a fucking dog.

remote monitoring ftw. there's no secure place in the world that doesn't rely on it.

This is a good covert motion-sensor-activated setup:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/SVAT-PI1000-Covert-MPEG4-Built/dp/B0011MK09C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240111874&sr=1-1"]Amazon.com: SVAT PI1000 Covert MPEG4 DVR - Recording System with Built-in Color Pinhole Surveillance Camera Hidden in a Motion Sensor: Electronics[/ame]

that's one hell of a setup. also here's the best-selling cam on [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-BL-C131A-Network-Camera-Wireless/dp/B000NVR9SM/ref=pd_ts_p_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo"]Amazon.com: Panasonic BL-C131A Network Camera Wireless 802.11: Camera & Photo[/ame] , for what it's worth, i might give it a try. i'm moving to a new area and between the gun thread and this thread, i'll probably own a glock and have a security installation by the end of next week. lolz. thank you WF paranoia.

surprised nobody's asked how much was taken? im guessing not to much since you dint put it in the bank let alone a safe right?

right?

fuck security cameras, once i get my own house im gonna do it old style fence up every window and doors and get a k9.

Sorry to hear that. Most break ins are committed by people the victim knows well.

1. Dogs.
2. Good locks at the back as well as front of house.
3. Gravel driveway.
4. Thorn bush hedging or spiked fencing.
5. Young people under thirty living with you who aren't hippies/druggies/alternative.
6. Double glazing.
7. No easy access to your back yard.
8. Build up your backyard fencing and make it solid.

Forget guns. You might injure yourself or a loved one messing with those. And no material good is worth that.

9.(Possibly): Make your house look boring. No signs of conspicuous consumption. No obvious burglar alarm; they indicate you have stuff worth stealing.

You don't make your house look crappy, either. Trash attracts more trash.

More of a Jedi mind-trick: "This is not the house you are looking for, move along".

I've had dogs all my life, including Rots. Yeah, they can be mean but if someone wants in they're going to get in, dogs or no dogs. Especially if the burglar is someone that the guy knows (in this case, it was). The dogs would have likely known and trusted the person enough to not give a shit.

8. Build up your backyard fencing and make it solid.

While I agree with this in terms of privacy, the more you "build up your backyard fencing and make it solid" the more privacy you just gave any burglar that wants to come in.

Just...wrong. But I don't want to turn this into a pro-gun vs. anti-gun debate.

Plus, guns or no guns, acemenace wasn't home during the robbery so guns are a moot point. Actually, guns would have been another thing to steal if they weren't properly locked away.

Man, I feel for you. We got robbed last year, and it fucking sucks ass. On top of the webcam, you should get a full-blown security system. They only cost a couple grand (here in Australia at least) and they're well worth the peace of mind.

Shit here in the stats it like 100 bucks for a full system installed and you just have to sign a year contract for like 30 bucks a month
