As said before, clickbank has a very low barrier. You don't need to go through approval processes, submit your website, request permission to promote an offer, ...
It's like this both for merchants as for affiliates. As a result, a lot of newbies start there. (I'm one of them by the way, but I only promote products that seem legit to me (certainly not make money / weight loss / ... niche) , even though it can take a while to find any legit products on there, lol

ClickBank is popular because information = money. You can sell anything as long as you make it sound good enough. I've had great success with ClickBank in the past and still continue to on a lot of my companies niche websites.
Plus if you're going to sell e-books, no matter what the niche is, it's dead simple to set it up there. Doesn't mean you have to sell "make money online" bs..anything goes. Despite all the negative shit they get, they really have succeeded in simplifying selling of e-books.
Clickbank only deals with Digital Products and they are generally easier to sell.
Forget about Clickbank. Too much competition. Moreover their tracking system getting more and more screwed up.
Stick with CPA or physical products. They are more stable to go for long term.

Because it's a great way to make a quick buck. Spend an hour writing a 20 page report. Spend another hour making a cheapo layout. Say "I make more money than most people make in a week" (Which is true as they are talking about some third world country) and in another hour you'll make about 200 bucks from the people buying hope.
Clickbank makes me feel really dirty - but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Seriously, though, if you don't mind dealing with niches that aren't super huge and widely appealing, you can make some easy money on Clickbank - making or just promoting stupid ebooks. Just look for odd stuff like man boobs and ringing ears.
If you want to hang out with the cool kids, though, it's best left as your dirty little secret. I guarantee there's at least one person in this thread making fun of Clickbank while simultaneously checking his Clickbank stats - my money's on the guy who said "Clickbank = digital point", since comparing anything to Digital Point is the absolute fastest way to make it 100% clear that you're way too uber to be affiliated with it, but I could be wrong
