Creating a FORUM questions. HELP NEEDED:)

Hey WF! I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, as you can see I'm new here.

I was curious, how should I go about starting my own forum?

It would be about Marijuana cultivation and use, since that's what i do best:updown:.

I'll probably have a blog on there too about my personal stuff. I would also like to add adsense and all of those advertising gizmos but I want to worry about that once its up and running.

So is this a practical idea or what? Any info regarding this is highly appreciated!

P.S. I'm new to the whole website thing, never owned one or made one or anything! I'm extremely willing to learn though!

2. Get forum software.
3. Install forum software
4. Promote forum.

Hahaa no need for the sarcastic remarks man. I hate when people do that shit to but I know nothing about the software so I wouldnt know where to start looking! Is there a certain type im looking for?

I just figured you have done this before and found a program that works for you.

But if thats not the case, I guess google it is...

Paid: Vbull and IPB
Free: PHPBB, SMF, PunBB, the list goes on and on.

If you are serious, get a paid license to either Vbull or IPB

Im going to start looking at those right away man, your help is greatly appreciated, thank you so much!

Anyway buy hosting for cheap. Once you're set up go to your control panel, click fantastico, then use that program to install some forums. A chimpanzee can do this. I know it at least installs simplemachines and phpbb - it might offer more. Install all of them - it's a breeze. Try them all out. Post, check out the admin functions, etc. See what fits the best and go with it.

Anyway, I checked out Vbulletin and really liked it. Are they not the guys who designed this and grasscity?

If someone could just clear this up for me..Do you still need to purchase hosting and domains with Vbulletin?

Note: its probably not that easy to monetize the marijuana niche. And its against Google's TOS due to the content.

But should you choose to proceed:

Yes you need hosting.
Yes vBulletin is the best.
Yes if you try to do this stuff yourself based on your questions thus far you are going to have a miserable time but I guess you gotta start somewhere.

Vbulletin just provides the forum software (at a cost). domains, hosting & forum design is all up to you.

If you're serious and want to throw a few grand at the site and do it right, pay the money for VB and spend the rest on marketing & paid posting.

Since it's your first forum, I'll make the bold claim that it will fail miserably. My suggestion is go with phpbb + free template + domain + hosting and get off under $50.

This might make it the least expensive life lesson you've ever learned and next time you'll be prepared to do it correctly.
 
Haha I checked out that Emarijuana thread, mad funny. I probably would have just bought that if I had the cash!

Very good advice from the both of you, and I agree. I'm going to start investigating the free software programs and I'll be back here once I run into something.

Look up information about overgrow.com and read about how a similar venture worked out for them in the end. They used to be the biggest forum of that type.
 
Yeah I am familiar with overgrow.com and the fact it was shut down. I do plan on looking more deeply into why it happened and run my page being extremely careful not to make the same mistake.

Fortunately for us, it wasn't the last of its kind!

I started checking out PHPBB, looks like a great service and I'm going to go with them most likely. I want to read up on overgrow before I make any moves though...

If you are serious about the project and expect the site to get big, do yourself a huge favor by just starting off with vBulletin if you can afford it.
 
If you start this up, plan on operating for a while before you start bringing in any revenue. Adsense and most other ad networks aren't going to want to touch you so don't waste time and space trying to run them; focus on building your user base first. Also, make it known that you do whatever you can to protect the privacy of your users (like IP banning govt hosts, etc.) and show them some things they should do to protect their identities online. No matter what you do, you will always have undercovers on there trolling for info, so operate the site with that knowledge in hand.

If you can build an active forum, start seeking out those products that the smokers use when they need to get around a drug screen. If they stand behind their product, they will send you review copies. Those are the types of things people usually need to get a hold of fast, and they need to know whether or not it works. The price is not an issue at this point.
 
@ Netphase: Yeah, after I researched all of the free shit I decided id be best off in the long run with vbulletin.

@ jryan:The thought of having undercovers is starting to freak me out a little bit:ugone2far:. I know that its going to happen no matter what, but as long as I dont post anything myself and I follow all of the laws, can I really get in any trouble?
