He is - THE CACTUS!
Thankfully I've never had anything on my drives that's that likely to get people knocking... but for a hypothetical, how does something like this measure up?
Large case, so plenty of room between HDD slots for a little bit of custom modding.
You make a little device, and bond it to the HDD with some resin, Preferably one that doesn't come off without something that's likely to corrode the HDD too. You connect the device to the powerfeed cable for the HDD.
Now, the device is mostly a nice little electromagnet. Maybe something made from a rare earth, so it'll have a strong field when current's run, but SFA without some juice.
You have a battery and a switch connected to this magnet.
This switch is set to go off and activate the battery attached to the magnet should it no longer detect the trickle feed of power coming to the HDD through the powerfeed cable. So, sort of a deadman switch.
In this way, if the HDD is removed from the tower, or the entire computer is seized, there's basically instant, or 15 minute delayed, initially undetectable destruction of the data.
Of course, if you have a black out and no UPS, you're fucked.
If your cleaner unplugs your comp to plug in the vacuum cleaner, you're similarly fucked.
Would something like that work?
As an aside, I haven't had suits, but I have had boys in blue asking why I, as a 12 year old, thought it was ok to tamper with phone lines.
I'd fucked up a phreak really badly, when you could still control things with tones.
