Ever had men in suits come to your door...

Thankfully I've never had anything on my drives that's that likely to get people knocking... but for a hypothetical, how does something like this measure up?

Large case, so plenty of room between HDD slots for a little bit of custom modding.
You make a little device, and bond it to the HDD with some resin, Preferably one that doesn't come off without something that's likely to corrode the HDD too. You connect the device to the powerfeed cable for the HDD.
Now, the device is mostly a nice little electromagnet. Maybe something made from a rare earth, so it'll have a strong field when current's run, but SFA without some juice.
You have a battery and a switch connected to this magnet.
This switch is set to go off and activate the battery attached to the magnet should it no longer detect the trickle feed of power coming to the HDD through the powerfeed cable. So, sort of a deadman switch.
In this way, if the HDD is removed from the tower, or the entire computer is seized, there's basically instant, or 15 minute delayed, initially undetectable destruction of the data.
Of course, if you have a black out and no UPS, you're fucked.
If your cleaner unplugs your comp to plug in the vacuum cleaner, you're similarly fucked.

Would something like that work?

As an aside, I haven't had suits, but I have had boys in blue asking why I, as a 12 year old, thought it was ok to tamper with phone lines.
I'd fucked up a phreak really badly, when you could still control things with tones.

worst feeling ever.

i have had suits looking for me on numerous occasions. in one situation a group of secret service came to my high school looking for a group of us. luckily, they were looking for something specific (although not drugs), and i didn't have anything on me. thankfully they couldn't do anything at that moment. the second i went home, i wiped EVERYTHING 4 or 5 times, and all my hard copies were thermited that same night.

another night, i came home from a friend's house to have my parents tell me about a phone call from a woman at NASA. she gave my parents her number for me, and said that i needed to quit with the illegal stuff and if i was still interested with this stuff later on after college to give her a call.

i eventually learned that no matter how fun or profitable some things are, it is not worth the feeling of having to watch over my shoulder constantly.

Come on guys, if you're really going to do something illegal on the Internet we all know the best way to cover your tracks is to find small storage shelter near a place with free wifi. Rent it with a fake ID and never drive to the place.

Make sure you chain enough proxies to keep them searching for years and encrypt your entire hard drive.

Never bring any of your equipment home or put it in you car.

geez. I thought everyone knew that.

Wow, you guys have some really interesting back rounds, hopefully this won't happen to me any time in the near future.

The magnet thing sounds good IN THEORY. Try it with an old HDD one time, you need one hell of a strong magnet to really mess up the files (and it would be good to have the drive spinning for that).

Problem here is also that you can not activate the magnet ANY TIME before you actually need to, as the iron core will get magnetized.

I feel more at home with my fellow crimeys on the outs.

The nicest thing about Aff marketing is that its legal (most of the time).

This thread is really interesting...
I wonder how many affiliate marketers fucked around with carding at some point... Jon? Nicky? Don't answer, it's OK.

That's usually why secret service come for you, and it's the scariest day of your life when that shit stops being an online thing and becomes real and in your face.

That stuff taught me a VERY valuable lesson that I haven't broken since then. NEVER get into anything illegal, especially for profit. Plain and simple, its just not fucking worth it. Even if you're desperate to hit it big, or you think that its foolproof, doesn't matter, not fucking worth it. I'd rather be poor and free than rich and in prison.
Quoted for Truth.
