Are you talking about the military unit that will be used in disaster/riot/looting situations? My understanding was that a special task force standing ready to go into the field at a moments notice would restore/maintain order in a disaster situation faster than the old fashioned way... calling out the Guard.
Personally, I feel that the Guard can handle it just fine. I also am a bit nervous about a Federal force doing this sort of thing - this is supposed to be handled by the States - not the Federal Government.
But because of the time lag factor with the Katrina mess, deployment time is being used as the reason to change this.

No, I guess your right, but the ammo is a hell of a lot cheaper and it was my first gun.

And this would be the example of why I married a man from the boonies. His dad owns a house on a nice chunk of land in the middle of nowhere, where in an apocalyptical situation, we could hunker down. REally, this is the only perk of marrying a hick. 
This is precisely why I own Ruger .22 (haha), a Mauser 8mm bolt action rifle (snip people from long distances.. hehe), double barrel over under 12 gauge shotgun, New England break action 12 gauge shotgun single shot (this shotgun kicks like a mule and laid me on my ass the first time I shot it), Marlin 30/30 Lever action (fuck yeah), Ruger Revolver, Walther p99, and lastly a 45 Colt. I'm still looking for more.If and when something like this happens I am fully prepared.

Oh, and I have a .17 Bolt action Marlin & a Lever Action Winchester .32
The lever action .32 is an old ass gun given to my brother and I by our grandfather. Its a real ground pounder and if your not wearing earmuffs your hearing will be fucked for a solid day or so.
Not to mention it kicks like a son of a bitch and the bullets aint cheap...
Im still looking for an M1 Garand personally... My brother managed to pick up one up pretty cheap from a coworker that bought an entire case - still packed in grease.

I saw the martial law thing, but was curious as to how Rep. Weller abstained from voting (He was the only one). So are they gonna arrest him or something? If not, then what good was the declaration of Congressional Martial Law?
I guess they would have to find him first - apparently he hasn't been seen since Friday .

I'm playing devil's advocate here - and I don't know what I'd do myself in that situation - but what if it was a friend or relative? I bet most of us know people in the forces and while I don't blame an Iraqi or Afghani for killing our soldiers while fighting to protect their country it's a bit different when it's your own troops... or maybe it's not?
Anyone here watch Spooks Code 9? (Prob UK only, not sure if it's been exported yet) Really shows how easy it would be for the UK to become a police state, I doubt there's much difference elsewhere regardless of gun ownership (unless the military switched sides). Handguns and rifles aren't much use if they are prepared to use tanks, missiles and aircraft to pacify the population.
