I like it, but I still like Megadeth better. I feel a connection with megadeth's music which i dont feel with metallica. That and metallica kicked dave mustaine out of the band and he went on to create megadeth just to get back at them, thats fucken awesome.

Watch this interview between mustaine and lars... they get pretty emotional as lars realises how he fucken mustaine over. you can tell mustaine had been waiting for this for the last 20 years.

YouTube - Dave And Lars Interview

'if i was at a party and i saw somebody hit you again id break his leg again in a second, thats just my nature'
mustaine is such a cool motherfucker..

whats lars say?
'I remember this tender side to you that I have always been attracted to'

I had no idea there was so much spite for the black album. I guess getting into rock myself in the mid 90's it was easier because I had heard various Metallica.

I do like Metallica because they change their sound a little every album - that should be expected as every band does it. Christ if Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, or Godsmak would just put out an album that sounds like their first they would be gods. Sadly that's not how music works as their is usualy a couple years between releases. People change.

Anyways, Saint Anger was the biggest pile of dog shit ever to released, new age Metallica as I would call it. I have hurd a smattering of songs off the new album, sounded more like their old stuff and that is a hell of a step up from Saint Anger. I'm looking forward to checking out the new disk, even though I'll probably be disapointed.

The music is akin to some of their old stuff, but it lacks the special sauce that made their earlier stuff great. Call that soul, passion for their music, booze, or whatever -- it's just not there anymore.

My other huge gripe is the sound production. WTF. They were producing higher quality recordings with 80s gear and a sliver of the budget. Was that intentional or do they just really not give a fuck anymore? Terrible mixing, clipping all over the place, shallow tinny drums and guitar tone...

If anyone wants to hear how Metallica SHOULD have evolved, download the Trivium Album Ascendancy. If Metallica put this album out rather then Trivium, they would be Gods.

Totally agree. Metallica has built up such a solid brand they can pretty much release anything and people will support it. But the fact of the matter is there are just way too many good bands out there these days, like Trivium, where you dont' have to force yourself to let the songs grow on you, you can start liking them immediately.

*sigh*

I would give my left arm to bring back that "old Metallica". Fade To Black, Sanitarium, Orion, Master Of Puppets, To Live Is To Die, Dyer's Eve, Damage Inc.............

It saddens me to hear their new stuff. It sucks.

BUT - they still deserve credit and respect for their old stuff. No matter how good or bad is their new stuff.

*goes listen to Slayer*

Me? I haven't forget napster.

sellout punks

Good thing I checked if anyone else said this before I was going to. :)

I grew up learning guitar from the pre-black albums - and as a musician, I can definitely say that the death magnetic album is right on par with their older stuff that everyone loved. Many of the songs on death magnetic could be found in their 80's albums. People have a hard time believing this / hearing this because of several reasons, (1) disbelief, (2) difference in production quality even though the riffs / songs are very similar, (3) grudge..

I just wish those that cry about metallica being sellouts and the whole napster thing would move the fuck on in life. None of that shit *ever* bothered me and I don't see why it should anyone else. I only give a shit about metallica for 1 thing, and 1 thing only, and that's the music. I don't give a shit if they want to make more money or their beliefs on napster, big fucking deal...

Oh and yeah, them selling out had absolutely nothing to do with the direction in music they took. Just before the release of death magnetic, metallica was interviewed live and lars explained why they had taken such a different approach in the albums they've released the last 20 years.. And that reason is because they didn't want to go near those several albums that everyone put on a pedastole, they believed they couldn't / didn't have anything else to offer and didn't want to tarnish those albums.. - as a musician I can understand this, though what they didn't forsee is that all their fans would ultimately hate everything else they did.. So in Death Magnetic, they went back to the type of music, the type of song structures, riffs, solos, that made them so popular and they did it very well.

I'm a hardcore fan of the old Metallica myself. It had passion. The songs were so carefully thought out. I mean common...listen to the intro to Blackened, the solo on Fight Fire with Fire, or the interlude to Master of Puppets. Freakin genius. It has passion...and you could tell then worked on those parts.

Death Magnetic is not bad...best they've done since Black. But the solos are still pretty basic guitar bable...and the lyrics have lost their creativity that James once had. I think their new writing process has attributed to this as they often wants lyrics on the spot. But I do like the album, I can rock it.

On another Metallica note...since I am a life-long fan, check this out:

Since to live so close the location where the classics were conjured up.
