how do you deal with horrible bounce rate?

I haven't read through much of this thread but look at your design I had one site with a design I thought was good and clean but had a really bad bounce rate, then I cleaned it up and organized things some more and the new design had an extremely good rate look at the approx stats below.

Design I thought was good had about 80% people leaving before 30 seconds while the cleaner and more organized new design I created I was getting only 18% of people leaving in the first 30 seconds, that's a huge improvement just for design tweaks.

I agree with BigWill (this may be a first). Pitch the product before you put the visitor in a negative mind state. I would wager you are turning people off to the product all together before they are hitting your money links.

thats what i was thinking, thats why i ditched the idea completely and its paid off really well with the new straight forward optimization.

Anyway, slightly off topic, but still regarding 'bounce rate', I heard/read somewhere that adwords will give a lower QS to ads that have high bounce rate. Now if this is true, how do they actually measure that since there isn't any code installed on our page?

Nah this isnt the acai stuff. but its similar.

and as for google rating bounce rate... i thought they already did that?

If I'm not using Google analytics, there's no javascript code or anything installed on my page, how exactly do they measure the bounce rate?

im not sure, i think they can measure if they person hits back and thats how they pick it up.
