The pace of change seems to be coming faster and faster. This simple concept often spurs me to work 90+ hour weeks because the opportunities we have now could completely disappear with the next big breakthrough...

I'm not complaining. Without rapid technological advancement the world could become a very dark place. If energy, housing, food, water, and medical needs are not met soon the majority of the world that lives with these problems will use the cheap technologies of today to wage war on the 'haves'. Example: Islamic Extremists.

If business/science is uninterupted over the next decade it seems all problems could potentially be solved.

The first world changing breakthough may already have happened:

EESTOR. The VC firm that brought us Google, Amazon, and eBay has backed a huge energy play. EESTOR has developed...for lack of a better term... a battery that stores massive amounts of power cleanly and cheaply. The kind of power that can be used to run cars for 500 miles without a recharge. Then consider having that kind of storage in every house - losing electricity for days or possibly weeks might not be such a disruptive prospect in catastrophies. Should this technology live up to expectations the looming oil crisis may be averted.

What do you guys think about it? Anyone have ideas on how to capitalize on such a sea-change in the status quo?

YES!
We need something like this. I can't wait till we can tell the Saudis, Venezuelans, and others to shove it.

The big issue will be getting the big oil companies to stop trying to block these sort of things. And get the car companies to stop catering to the oil companies. Most of all, the American people need to know about this and set the demand!

Get Nuclear fusion plants to work more efficiently to help with the electric consumption of batteries like this, and I think America could really move to the next level as far as dealing with our awesome energy consumption habits.

It's hard to imagine what will happen to the oil rich nations if the demand for oil plummets...

Right now the oil rich nations (excluding Canada) use the riches amoung the elite. Then they finance organizations that hate the west and blaim their problems on others. It's an amazing play --- they rob the poor of oil...then get the poor to hate us!

If the oil money disappears things could get worse before they get better. The poor in these oil rich nations will get even poorer... and hate us even more. Until the new technologies become affordable to the 3rd world we will be in a precarious situation.

We are counting chickens though... This amazing technology needs to come to market, get infrastructure (electrical refilling stations), and prove safe and reliable before anything changes. But if it pans out, the change will be earth shattering.

Special interests will continue to fuck over the little guy.

Of course! But the fucking will get less relevant =)

The cure for cancer, the cure for our energy crisis... these things will not be swept under the rug. Information moves too fast, too many people will be watching.

BTW... your comment seems awfully 'conspiracy theorist' for a former gov't operative. Know something we don't?

I agree with what you guys are saying, but the simple fact is that the "oil money" will suppress all of this technology. The reason is simple, money! In the end they will win because they control all the cards.

I'm not saying it's right, just the way it is.

despite popular belief not everyone from the middle east hates us.
qatar, united arab emirates, saudi arabia, india and even parts of lebanon are pro-western.
just because the media shows arabs burning flags, it hardly represents the opinions of the general public.

we'll keep using oil for as long as oil is available. companies like exxon mobile, shell, british petroleum and conacophillips have tens of billions of dollars to fight against new technology.

Im glad Im not the only one that realizes it.

capitalism is better than any previous governing concept in the history of humanity, but it is still vitally flawed.
large corporations do what is profitable, not what necessarily benefits the general public.

There are forces at work more powerful than 'oil money'. Namely, the prospect of war.

Oil doesn't have to even come close to running out before massive discontent sweeps across the developed world.

We are rapidly approaching a point when the demand for oil outstrips the extraction of oil. Some claim that point is now... but if not now it is certain to be very soon.

Once demand outstrips supply prices will sky rocket. America will be one of the hardest hit countries. Our entire society could crumble. And... with our military might and a furious population the oil rich countries will tremble. You can bet that the oil rich have already forseen this.

Technologies that slow or avert this coming crisis will not be suppressed. Slowed...maybe... but it is in no ones interest to stop them.

Damn you guys and your fast interesting posts! I need to get back to work...

Yeah, I agree the media portrays the worst. It's what they do and it might only reflect the need for ratings. However, that doesn't change the strategy of robbing the poor and financing the hate towards the west. Big money is thrown at extremists...otherwise they wouldn't pose the problem they do.

The hate is a growing problem, not a shrinking one. IMO government is not the solution to this problem. In fact, I wish government would get out the way so that capitalism can work it's magic. If the middle east develops a middle class, our problems are largely over.

we should bomb hell out of the middle east and then park our 1million horsepower Hummer 99's on there sandtraps! (jj)

This is a little :offtopic: but I think you just stated the exact reason why we are in Iraq right now.

Not for WMDs
and not so George Bush can profit directly
and Not just for the hell of it.

I think our leaders know that an oil crisis was on the horizon. And we wanted to secure Iraq before some huge and fast growing nation like China takes it.

Invest in the companies that are behind the tech. Considering the big hikes in gas prices a year ago sparked a huge fire to push alternative energy sources and funding grew ten fold now would be a good time to start investing.

The oil companies escalated the coming of new energies by their greedy actions and the low prices at the pumps right now show they are trying to do damage control.

I truly wish that the Venezuelan government would try charging $200 for a barrel of oil instead of making threats to the US about it. That would just speed things along even faster and before you know it they will be paying people to take their oil.

Good! I'm in a big need for a really long lasting battery!

Capitalize.... CARS!?

You are dead on target that is exactly what happened imo. Also to add to the original topic of the thread I don't see any big uprisings happening anytime soon. Why? because the simple facts are that the majority of Americans are of the herd mentality they just go with the flow and try to fit in. Now I know there are people in this forum that don't fit to that mold and I am one of those, but that is the minority of people.

The majority will just follow along with whatever comes next, they will pay $4.00 per gallon for gas. Oh they will bitch about it, but no large scale action will be taken. Why? because it is the path of least resistance to go along with the flow.

Well I have wondered off topic LOL. Time will tell.

I want one for my laptop.

I'm assuming they're not a publicly traded company, yeh?

There was something else too along these lines, but i can't think of it. If I remember the article I'll post it here.
