Good afternoon all,

Recently I purchased a .asia domain name with a generic sounding name containing two words.

I have been approached by a company who are sending threatening emails to me regarding trademarks etc apparently international trademark which I don't believe they have.

Checking out the company who contacted me they do exist with similiar name on few other tlds. How should I proceed with this and protect myself and domain name.

I'm wondering should I put domain name for sale auction off or what, obviously I don't want to give it away what should I do?

This is first time in this situation so unsure how to proceed.

What are you currently doing with the domain currently? From my understanding they don't have a leg to stand on if you registered the domain in good faith and aren't trying to profit from their brand.

If you're not doing anything with the domain, I say try to sell it back to them for a grand or two, with a letter explaining that by paying you off this trifling amount, it will surely cost less than it does for them to have their lawyer convey even one more round of communication.

I tried that with Anheuser Busch one time when I registered "trybud.com"

They didn't take too kindly to it (even though I only asked $500)

They had lawyers spend countless hours drafting up crap to send my way, sent it to the ICANN arbitration whatever, and they obviously ruled against me.

I was only out about $30 by the end of it, but they took a hell of a lot of my time, and scared the crap out of me.

Anywho, I would say if you think you could sell it at an open auction, you might try that before they lock it down through your registrar.

Like audax said, if you aren't profiting greatly from their name, there's really nothing legally they can do, but if they have a trademark, they can easily send it into the National Arbitration Forum, wait for the "3 person review" which happens about a month later, and they will rule against you handing the domain over to the company.

Here is a quick example of that:

Yes i have a company with same name as them registered.

They do not have an international trademark as far as i am aware.
