All national parks are closed... but the park police are still on duty.
The cost of keeping parks open after the park police have already been paid has to be very small if anything at all.
Yes, this is petulant White House bullshit. The park police are PAID during this time. The WWII memorial is a open space in a public park. There is NO reason for those to be closed since personnel is on staff anyway. Even worse - even during non-shut down oversight by park police is 'nominal' at best.
HOWEVER, the White House has ordered those places barricaded and 'shut down' in order to make a political point and create a great visual photo op for the media.
Being from Canada, I don't quite fully comprehend the process that lead to the shutdown. Like some others have mentioned already though, I don't see it being that big of a deal for the US. Life will go on in the meantime and when they start back up again.
The shutdown is because they couldnt agree on how to improperly spend the money they steal from tax payers.
In a week or two they will also need to vote on raising the debt ceiling.
This is a big deal if you believe in our system. Soon we will not be able to afford the interest on our debt.
Well, I am not in America so I don't care. It seems like nothing drastic has happened so far. I guess no one really cares.
The government isn't shut down. 17% are on furlough. That just tells me there is at least 17% that could be cut from the budget. It's costing more to close the national parks than it cost to run them in the first place. As to the poster above that mentioned adding 800k more people to unemployment, well they aren't unemployed and will be paid retroactively after they go back. They are essentially getting paid time off. And lastly the debt ceiling isn't as big an issue as the MSM is letting on. The fed takes in more than enough money to cover our debt. It's all about politics and optics.
This is just a game by two gangs controlled by the same hidden masters. When congress is screaming at each other, they're doing more deadly deeds in private. For all the talk about shutdowns, they found time to increase security legislation.
They barely manage to cover the interest on the debt. And let's not forget that they are basically just a sanctioned counterfeiting operation.
Also, what about the unfunded liabilities of the US somewhere in the ballpark of $123 Trillion?
Even if they shutdown half the gov't most people wouldn't notice. There are at least 4 levels of gov't in the US:

If you print enough dollars, the value of the dollar will decrease and their debt will not be an issue. It is one thing to owe trillions now. If in the future you can only buy 1/100th of what you can buy with $1 now, then that debt has effectively been reduced by 1/100th.
When you borrow in a currency you control, you have a HUGE advantage to dealing with the possibility of default.
Barely manage? They take in almost 2 trillion dollars a year in tax revenue and the interest is only 300 billion a year.
that's the choice -- default vs devaluation -- and there's no way the US will default willingly (yet), so what they'll continue to do (devalue) is clear.
the end result will be the same either way. the US dollar will get canned as the global reserve currency... countries will stop lending to the US... taxes will skyrocket, inflation will be comical, government controls on capital will go thru the roof, economic collapse, massive poverty, loss of superpower status, and we change our name to the United States of Argentina.

Your scenario might play out. I doubt it though. But still, it might; the people in charge have contingencies for the contingencies of their contingencies. They don't so much have a definite aim as they simply do calculations so that whatever might happen, they are on top.
The reasons it might not, is that you are following the rules of the game. It is like playing chess, and the game is basically over, you have his king trapped, no matter what he does he loses, you have check mated him. So the logical extension is you win. But what if your opponent then takes a gun out, and says that his pawns can now move in any direction. He changes the rules and wins.
