18 cases of firearms being used for self defense this week

To be fair, the list of murders committed with guns in that same time period is probably much longer...posting this list doesn't really "prove" anything

It proves that there are legitimate reasons to own firearms

This is probably true, however the list of crimes that were prevented because the "victim" brandished a firearm without discharging it is likely larger than both of these. What about the crimes prevented in open-carry states, where a would-be criminal walks into a store, sees that the clerk has a .45 on his hip, pays for his cheetos and leaves? These things are difficult, if not impossible to measure.

Why does it need to be compared to history?

Because the way this was written it's just a meaningless number. I'm sure you could pull up a similar data set that instead of guns focuses on martial arts training, but unless it's compared against a baseline, there's nothing actionable at all...it's just anecdotal

But it's not the rate which confirms the legitimacy of firearms as defense weapons. A single occurrence confirms the legitimacy. The article just happens to exhibit 18 such occurrences.

I suppose. But without any historical comparisons or controls with the data, it really is a meaningless data set

Dchuck,

You may not remember me, I met you a little over a year ago. I was staying near your place and meeting up with some WF members at your house. You were going to come out but you stayed in.

Anyway, from our brief introduction as well as reading your posts on this forum over the years, I know you're a smart dude.

We disagree on politics, but I respect you and your opinions. I wish you would have came out that night, would have loved to talk shop with you and hung out.

I lived 4 blocks from you for about 6 months.

I didn't carry or own a gun when I was in Cali, the laws are crazy strict.

But during my time there, and I loved the area by the way, I saw a dude get literally beaten to death on Garnett, right in front of Plumb Crazy.

I saw a dude get tazed by the cops right in front of my apartment, he was cracked out on something and threatened to kill one of the neighbors.

Shootouts (not in PB, but SD in general) seemed like an almost daily occurrence. I remember watching the news live and seeing a cop get shot in the throat while some crazy gunman was burning his house down with his family inside (I think in El Cajon).

In San Diego, you have a 1 in 25 chance of being a victim of crime. I had a beach cruiser stolen, and plenty of run-ins with homeless dudes and gang members who would probably slit my throat for the change in my pocket.

I was in your house bro, you didn't know me.

I saw the Macbooks, the big screen, etc etc... And if I wanted what you had I have no doubt I could have got my hands on a gun within an hour and busted in to take your shit at gunpoint. And if I was a criminal, I probably wouldn't want any witnesses left behind.

I'm not a criminal.

But you know the crazy shit that goes on around you. I just can't see how you rationalize MORE gun control, especially in that part of the country.

Again, from what little I know about you I think you're a great guy. I think we'd get along and have a lot of fun shooting the shit over a beer.

But I just can't see eye-to-eye with you on your gun views. Maybe you can help me understand?

My rational, for PB in particular, is that those who want guns for illegal purposes can buy them as easily as they can buy a pipe from a head-shop.

Why should law abiding citizens have to pay hundreds of dollars and "qualify" for the right to defend themselves? And why do you think it should be even harder?

No offense bro, seriously. I'm genuinely interested in your point of view on the subject.

Creepiest post of the year.

Excellent post.

Criminals are criminals because, by their very nature, they do NOT follow the laws. Thus, any gun regulation/control is only going to hurt the honest law abiding citizens.
In fact, I'd say that the "professional criminals", those who commit crimes for a living, are hoping and praying that more gun control laws are passed. It will make their job a lot easier.

Seriously bro WTF?

I just put on the whole "not a criminal" act and now he's going to put 2+2 together.

The only reason I visited that shit-hole of a city was for D's Yanni collection, it's world-renowned.

Dreamcache, you fucking snitch.

I remember :)

I've lived in the neighborhood for over 5 years now, seen fights, talked to cops, had drunk people walk into my house thinking it was someone else's...I've never once though "wow, I would be so much safer with a gun right now". Maybe it's because I'm a pretty big guy and have even bigger friends, maybe I'm not cautious enough, idk. I just focus on much more stressful and immediate threats in my life like business and family.

No, it just confirms that an event happened. Imagine if in each instance, instead of whipping out a gun in self defense, the person instead bit off the tip of one of their fingers and spit it at the attacker and that stopped the dude in his tracks...would that prove that was a worthy self defense act?

I think I saw a guy do that once at Ocean Beach.

For real though, one of the craziest things I saw in SD was a sword fight in OB. Seriously saw a bum fight with swords. One dude had a trash-can shield.

They were literally dueling to the death. I was watching from the pier, they ended up running away because a beach cop happened to be nearby.

I see a toothless guy with a sword who gives zero fucks, I want a gun on me.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

OB is a horrible place, I know it has cool bars and shops but the bums literally are all just murderers, fuck that shit

If 1,000 people a week tried the finger tip defense tactic and it worked just 18 times, that would be better than the click through rate most people get on facebook.

Some of the arguments you've brought up in here could be applied to shooting stories also. The 26 Sandy Hook School deaths on their own do not statistically mean much, but they do highlight the fact that guns can be used to kill people.
