Fuck Television

I would get rid of it if it wasn't for the news channels. I can't find a way to get all the news channels without cable. And some of the stupid shows are fun to watch sometimes.

Ya this is the one reason why I've been thinking of getting cable again. If there's a catastrophe/collapse I want live coverage god damnit! and popcorn

I personally love T.V but i realized that its highly hindering my productivity. I've begun to limit myself to only 1 hour of television per day.

Yeah, its pretty cool when you are watching something as it is developing. I remember one night around 5 am I turned on cnn and saw this crazy video of what looked like a big landslide. It took me a minute or two to realize that it was live tv (I assumed it wasn't because it was 5am) and it was a tsunami in Japan from a huge earthquake. It's pretty cool to see stuff like that just moments after it happens.

Same thing when all the news channels were live late Sunday night saying the president was about to speak and they were all speculating what it was about. Then it leaked out that it was about Bin Laden.

The everyday news and political opinions and stuff is interesting sometimes too, but can get really annoying too. Right now they are all talking about the high profile leaks about the Iran hacks and stuff.

Sure it's full of shit, so be selective in what you watch. It's a valuable source of information and entertainment if you sift through the dumbing down fodder and focus on the brain stimulating, thought provoking and educational content. If you can't find any, it's too late. You've been dumbed down too much.

I stopped not so much because of the content, but also because of the format. I feel that the format of short periods of content followed by constant interuptions fosters a short attention span. Even if you record it and cut out commercials with one of those contraptions, it is still terribly repetitive and dumb-ed down (nat geo included). I also think the frequency of TV is bad. Even a shitty book is better than 'high end' tv.

Do like me, and get a PS3!

Thinking about it, I don't even have cable on my TV. Paying $100/month for cable, so should maybe wire it upstairs too. Only bought the TV for the PlayStation though. Makes for a good break from work.

Ya I remember being up really late one night working on stuff, long ago (2004 or whenever it was) and went to Yahoo and saw a headline something like
"Tsunami Strikes, 1500 confirmed dead"
Didn't think to much, but went back there every so often and the headline kept changing
"Tsunami Strikes, 10,000 confirmed dead"

"Tsunami Strikes, 30,000 confirmed dead"

"Tsunami Strikes, 100,000 confirmed dead"

"Tsunami Strikes, 150,000 confirmed dead"

I was like WAT THE FUCK.. I don't think i could even get live news on the tv on it back then at that time till the next day.

Ended up being over 230,000 killed from the Indian Ocean earthquake tsunami. It was fucking Epic (in a bad way).

Something about witnessing historical cataclysms is awe inspiring, entertaining and requires live news and popcorn.

Used to watch the channels I thought were my friends: Discovery, History, Military. Then, realized they were never going to reveal anything of significance to peasants on these supposed history stories of truth. That fucker Hawass:boid: that does those Eygpt stories is the biggest disinfo sob ever. Now all 300 channels are dead to me; Long live the internets.

Stargate SG1 was the last show I watched on TV... Still don't know how that series ended...

We have 1 TV here today and my wife does watch a lot of YouTube on it. ;)

Other than that we do pay for basic cable, just because I live in tornado alley and I am forced to turn on the news when the sirens are blaring outside.

TVs = Sheeple incubators.

We cut the cable off almost two years ago, and it took about 4 months for the kids to stop complaining about it everyday.

However, the improvement in their attention spans, attitudes, and scope of interest in the world has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Watch all the TV you want personally, but if you are a parent, consider the example you are setting for you children. There is more to life.

that's true for commercial channels, most of my viewing is non commercial ABC for my gardening fix as well as the odd comedy or doco and SBS for some world news content and also comedy and docos. Pointless trying to watch a movie on mood killing commercial channels and all the reality tv is shit (thanks America) If I want to watch a movie, it's on dvd. If you pick and choose your programs, it's a rewarding medium. Too many closed minds here.

The news is all bullshit anyway and misleading you seriously. So you are mi-informing yourself watching the news just like watching commercials and thinking "yeah, lemon scented pledge IS the BEST way to get up dust in my house".

The news sells you on an idea just like commercials do.

For me, I have always hated tv OMFG. But yet, always had it on to hate, to hear while working, to catch a hot chick on or to stumble across something amazing like Whale Wars.

For me, I haven't watched tv in 2 years amazing how you can turn it off and not miss it. So it was on the other day .. "wow this thing works"? and i sat down in front of it.

It was of all fucking things, American Idol and here this ethnic chick was singing her lungs out, and hitting some high ass notes to this song. Sounded awesome. I thought, "hey she ain't bad".

I kick my feet up a moment to see what all the fuss was about and be amazed at the audience and the glitz and glam of the idol show. Wow.
Then Jennifer Lopez comes on .. shes a star right.. and a judge too I think of this show .. lots of fan fair.. obviously she is still trying to be hip hop.. ok ... I watch ... after all she is a successful pop star ...

and then I saw she was lip syncing .. faking it !
Here this young girl, a nobody ... a no name was belting out a beautiful song.. and the shit head pop star worth millions is faking it and we are worshiping her.

"Oh yeah" I thought, this is why I don't watch this retarded shit and left .....

Fuck tv.

I torrent a couple shows, love me some whale wars goddam great,
and someone on this forum got me on suits..

Listen to NPR its the closest thing you'll get to the truth these days

Have my 52" Plasma connected to a desktop (only used for TV) and only watch stuff I download or on demand. Haven't watched an advert in about 3 years and always have quality stuff to watch. Normal TV/Cable is crap. Watch what you want when you want.
