New Country for Old Libertarians: Seasteading Institute

How about we make a rule that nobody with the HIV or any STD gets to go there. AIDS-FREE and STD-FREE Zone - have all the unprotected sex you want.

For all the smart moves the guy with this idea has made in his life - this is not one of them.

The idea of libertarians living any closer to each other than 5 acres each in a true libertarian environment is laughable. Libertarians need a lot of space to make certain they can do whatever they want and still not bother the libertarian next door enough so that the libertarian next door doesn't decide it's time to make some rules.

If they achieved micro-nation status they'd be SO rich (with their own banks, shipping registrations, gambling laws, investment businesses etc) that I'm sure no pirate, or disease, or lack of a constant stream of pussy would ever hinder them.

This is such a bad idea it's unreal. They cost to live there will be astronomical.
But the business opportunities of not living under a restrictive government could make you astronomical income!

They will either have to grow all their fruits and vegetables on the floating shit city or have to park so close to the shore that they might as well live on the land.
Nahh, they absolutely have to live at least 6 miles away to have their own internatonal waters, so it's a matter of just getting food shipments by cargo frieghters. (Which creates trade and more industry, a good thing.)

I doubt it would be worth anyones' time there to grow food or fish... Trade is key.

Nobody sane will ever purchase one of these and abandon land to live on a ticking time bomb. The population will be made up of actors, rock stars and other useless rich people like rappers and painters.
Nope, the population will be people who can MAKE MONIEZ while there... Such as those doing international trading or server hosting. (And a few billionaires who truly believe in the cause, of course.)

What happens when the doctor and the guy that runs the water recycling machine get into a bar fight and kill each other in the middle of a storm. You're all fucked. Then you're gonna call up the "repressive governments" and ask for help.
They'll have a company for that called the justice co. or something... Like commercial courts, I'd think.

And why just 1 doctor? And why not pull up your platform to another one? Their plan is to make thousands and dock them together as they see most advantageous.

This is a worse idea than Jurassic Park.
Well yeah, when you let man-eating monsters roam free on them... But businessmen trying to make a buck?

It'd be like living on a nicer version of an offshore oil platform, at about 4000% of the cost of living on land. Who the fuck would decide that's a good idea?
Lots of ppl want to live to Hawaii, and no one there is free of the oppressive laws and regulations these things would enjoy.

Then there's problems with supply chains,
International trade would be a strongsuit of libertarian businessmen, not a problem.

natural disasters,
Deep at sea? For a huge rig? Tidal waves can't happen out there, so the only natural disaster that could affect them is a hurricane... Which doesn't ever sink any oil rigs these days.

wars breaking out,
One of your best points; I could see it happening but not in their beginning stages. Perhaps when there are 20 or more of these and they've made their alliances and enemies among themselves, but that could be 50 years hence.

Still, war could break out here so it's isn't an issue for this consideration.

pirates lobbing RPGs at you,
As soon as a pirate gets in this thing's 3-mile radius the defense co could open fire with advanced weaponry... No need to be all diplomatic about it and set up bases all over the planet like america does... no, such a land can keep our firepower for defense & have automatic weapons pointing out of every window. The pirates would never even have a chance.

cost of living increases by probably 3000%+,
Of course all prices would go up, but as said earlier, the majority of the ppl on these things would be making bank from an advantageous trade with foreign nations. The first guys do need to be millionaires though and take a big risk to get these things 'floating.'

life turns into an shitty, isolated existence where you're bored out of your mind within 2 weeks, and many more.
Isolation could get old, no doubt, but the internet will certainly help. Anyway I'd imagine most ppl there would be too busy working to be that concerned, and most would be rich enough to spend lots of time on the mainland, usually only 6 short miles away. (The channel islands are all about 22 miles away from the California coast, and many of them have full-fledged cities on them.)

Throw 300 people onto an offshore rig, say "this is how we're going to live", and then say, "look, we have no government!". Sounds like the citizens will be guinea pigs even moreso than they already are on land.
I consider this the interesting part. No one can guess how this will turn out but obviously the first guinea pigs will be the biggest believers so there is little chance of abandonment or infighting...

Other colonies have started up before a lot further away than 6 miles. Even in places with no natural resources. (Like Antartica.)

This is the dumbest shit ever. Sorry living on oil rigs is not the answer, libertarians. No matter how many arguements made for it the fact is they wont be able to defend themselves against much more than a group of disorganized Pirates

To me , a aircraft carrier would make much more sense than a 'floating city' as it's already done, has plenty of room to land a airplane and many last for 50+ years.

Could you remind us of why though? Who says they can't have torpedoes installed, rocket launchers from every tower and mini-guns bolted to every residences' deck?

Anyway, what are they hoarding there that makes them so worth the trouble? Think those millionaires are receiving Gold Bullion through the internet?

I have to admit I doubt security will be as much trouble as many think. They likely will locate it within the overall security reach and protection of US forces - even if in international waters. A full on assault is not likely in this case - especially if near shipping lanes and just outside the line.

Would be an interesting experiment though I doubt libertarians can really live together - someone mentioned the Justice Co. etc - but to whom is that company accountable. What is one party to a suit wants Justice Co #1 and the other Justice Co #2 - or is one going to have a monopoly? And then who is going to ensure that judgements are not biased? Who is going to enforce claims against the de-salinization plant if the water is not good (etc) ? There are checks and balances that arise within nations for a reason.

Maybe I simply do not understand libertarians and am confusing them too much with anarchists.

If this true, I feel sorry for the gazillions of humans that don't have anything to eat in a daily basis. When someone is shitting on toilets made of gold, something is absolutely wrong.

Republic of Minerva - It's been tried (and has failed) before.
I knew someone would have had to bring up Minerva... But c'mon... They grabbed a 1 foot tall atoll that was in dispute halfway across the world... So many problems there that don't apply here come to mind it's silly.

There aren't even any lessons from Minerva to be learned other than:
1. Build your own land, &
2. Build it higher than 1 foot above the waterline.

If this true, I feel sorry for the gazillions of humans that don't have anything to eat in a daily basis. When someone is shitting on toilets made of gold, something is absolutely wrong.
If what's true? Who said anything about golden toilets?

Did you think this was about the illuminati or something? Learn to read.

No. Just wasted money, that's all.
I only see a bargain.

Taking over an existing country like the USA to bring a civilized form of government to would cost TRILLIONS of dollars and lost lives out the wazoo.

A few millionaires pool their money together to make their own without taxing you one penny?

Trillions saved.

@Joevis, you clearly don't understand the project.

I think any time you get a bunch of people together you're going to end up with disagreements over how to run things, rules and laws, resource access and management etc. Politics is pretty much inevitable.
The platforms won't be run as countries. They will be private property, similar to the special economic zones of Dubai, Freeport etc.

doesn't sound very libertarian to me.
What do you know about libertarianism?

If you have the money, then you can do what you want.. Right?
And the peasantry on Wickedfire STS will be sure to judge you for it.

Maybe I simply do not understand libertarians and am confusing them too much with anarchists.
The people involved with TSI are for the most part anarchists. Anarcho-capitalists of the David Friedman variety specifically.

Is it a coincidence that many of the forum socialists are posting on political threads on a Friday afternoon?

Would it be too impossible/absurd to setup a virtual government model online for testing? People love arguing and voting for shit online, couldn't we mimic this in someway to reflect a real world government? Seems like too many political decisions are made based on the "lets try this shit out, here's why it might work!" attitude.

^Am I way too fucking high right now?

Politics aside, I love the idea of living on an island type community, but I'd rather go for something like this:
