This may be a bit old fashioned, but if you really need to rake in $500,000 during 2011, I suggest you try a unique sale where you require participants to feed your paypal account the following: First sale equals $10, The next sale is doubled to $20; the next doubles to $40 and so on. Close the sale when your total reaches the $500,000.oo plus all expenses. You will have your money within 30 days, but paypal might hold onto it until your deals pass their muster. Know what I mean Jelly Bean? But to be on safe side, you better have a darn nice E-book you are selling, or some of those buyers will want a refund. Those charge backs take their toll. Good luck.

While I admire your desire and ambition for asking, if you were capable of making $500k, you probably wouldn't be asking. BTW, Making $1mm in 2010 sets you up pretty good for making $500k in 2011, doing the same thing.

Or you can just hire people who actually know what they are doing drive the business into the ground and run off with all the money
Heck I know this one chick who stole 10K from work....stupid idiots didn't have cameras on the safe and lad off the wrong person. Of course she got caught when her mum called the business and thanked the owner for giving her daughter a 10K "bonus"

If you are looking to make that kind of profit this year, than I think you need to look at what is working "this year." There are over 1 billion smart phone apps and somehow they seem to be doing nothing but gaining momentum. You can order pizza on phone apps, you can schedule house cleanings, you can do anything. My smaller business was looking for a way to reach more clients and make our services more easily accessible to customers and we reached out to an android application development company. The world is turning cellular, we figured we better jump on board.
Writing apps is a great idea. You might not reach your target of $500,000 but you can certainly make a decent sum if you have a good idea and a marketing plan.
But it's an exaggeration to say that there are "over 1 billion smart phone apps". According to this article, there are only 300,000 iPhone apps and 60,000 iPad apps: How Many iPhone Apps Are There? 306,554 – And 60,000 iPad Apps If there really were that many apps, then writing apps would be a bad idea for making money; competition would be way too stiff.
