Sorry Born Agains.... Hawking says there is no heaven.

Hawkings has some weird philosophies and tends to flip flop a lot on the whole god thing or at least people confuse his theories as flip flopping. He believes every combination of lifeforms and universes that can ever exist does exist and will exist. He believes there are deities out there right now with the capability of transporting between universes, moving through wormholes, transversing time, and creating universes of their own, but doesn't believe ours was created by one. I for one don't understand it but I will agree with him that our universe, if created by god, wasn't created for just us.
I do think its interesting though that for over 3 thousand years the bible has said, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Notice the plural. And it wasn't until the last 15 years that we've realized there is galaxies other than our own out there.

Such a sad, trolly argument... I do believe there was once one Christian, somewhere, that did go "to god" and still suffered.

No Way. The bible is filled with believing men who god rewarded.

Moses for example got to lead his people through the desert for 40 years only to be denied entry into the promised land.

Job had everything taken from him.

And then there are all those women in the bible that turned to salt and shit.

Besides - god (our idea of god) is an alien race anyway. Haven't any of you watched stargate?

I think this is a good rule of thumb. Why make up stories when you can't support it? I'm sure the man doesn't have a problem with fairytales as long as we understand that they are just that until proven otherwise.

He's also making an unprovable claim about what is behind a door. I can say I have a unicorn in a room. He can say I haven't proved it or that it is unlikely based on the evidence available to him. Until he goes into the room though, he can't scientifically prove that there is no unicorn.

Scientists keep proving the "impossible" to be possible, so maybe they should use more caution throwing that declarative around. Hawking himself has admitted that he held off at first on talking about time travel because he feared ridicule from his colleagues. His peers had never proved it couldn't happen, but instead many of them had judged it to be impossible.

And it wasn't until the last 15 years that we've realized there is galaxies other than our own out there.

They have discovered a bunch of new stuff out there in recent years, in part due to the Hubble telescope, but it was actually nearly 100 years ago when Hubble the man realized there were other galaxies.

This looks like a good place for this

Anyway I'll lay it down for you.

The thing atheists seem to fail at is that they don't realize they are part of a religion that is atheism. The reason is that atheists believe that god doesn't exist, now take note of the word believe cause that's the important bit...

Sorry Kingfish; Neither that dude or you seem to know what the definition of a Religion is.

Here is the most widely accepted definition of religion:

Religion is a cultural system that creates powerful and long-lasting meaning by establishing symbols that relate humanity to beliefs and values.

Here are the dictionary.com definitions for religion:

re·li·gion
[ri-lij-uhn] Show IPA
–noun
1.
a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2.
a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.
3.
the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.

Does any of that apply to something as simple as just a belief that some evidence you considered may be right?

Is it a "Religion" to think that you left your car keys on the dresser a minute ago in an empty house so they will most likely still be there when you look there again?

No, that's called RATIONAL THINKING. -That's all Atheism is. Choosing to "act on" the evidence you have seen... There is no assumed culture tied to acting on this decision.

Until the day we atheists start grouping together and creating a culture with a shared, specific ideology, then our beliefs, nor lack thereof, cannot be defined as a religion.

The closest thing we have to that is the farcical Church of the Flying Spagetti Monster, because Pastafarians do have a shared culture and specific fundamental belief system. (Although it's technically a farce, so by nature it really doesn't have squat to do with what they really believe.)

Bottom line: A Belief != A Religion.

Beliefs can be as small as believing that the ground will be there the next time your foot steps forward. A Religion is a far, far, far larger thing and Atheists find it irrational to string together that many beliefs for any reason.

I do think its interesting though that for over 3 thousand years the bible has said, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Notice the plural. And it wasn't until the last 15 years that we've realized there is galaxies other than our own out there.
1. The plural use of the Heavens could be referring to how the stars look different from different latitudes or during different seasons.
2. Edward Hubble & Bernard Seyfert, (1920's) and even Lord Rosse in 1845 would disagree with your 15 year estimate of an external-galaxy-realization. :stonedsmilie:

Stop the presses.

Stephen Hawking said something.

...in other news, atheist WF idiots use a paraplegic to further their agenda.

Said he to himself as he recursively chatted freely with someone masquerading as a mirror.

Trying to sound clever doesn't make you sound less stupid. . . (In fact your post sounds like nonsense, so maybe I have learning difficulties!)

Science is based around debunking it's own theories for pete's sake. Everytime someone comes up with something it is first established if it stands up to experiment. If it doesn't it's immediately dismissed, as without being able to establish something in either the positive or negative renders it worthless.

Science will always get shit wrong, because science cares not for the theory itself or even any outcome when tested. It is based around disproving itself and everything it may or may not currently hold true.

If religion took a scientific approach to that which must not be questioned [gimme a fucking break], religion would discard itself for the utter bullshit that it is. No experiment can either prove or disprove the flying spaghetti monster's existence, therefore it is tantamount to irrelevant.

I'm not completely sure why I always get involved in these threads, because to believe, in my very arrogant opinion, is just laughable. If believers weren't subjected to the religious bullshit at a young age, or were at least bought up to question their surroundings and be proud of their own thoughts, they might actually realise how utterly retarded religion is.

I feel sorry for those who are that closed minded they believe in heaven, hell, the devil, god and sin. What. a. load. of. shit. (It's like a shit fucking fairy tale for adults.)

Seriously, I'm shocked by the number of people who are seemingly not afflicted with a serious mental disablement, who fail to think freely and continue to live by this pathetic childish doctrine without question.

You have a mind, fucking use it. Stop wasting it on rubbish that holds you to ransom with fear and a non-existent dividend. The time to appreciate the brilliance of your life is numbered and once it's over. . . it's fucking over. Game over, lights out, ciao.

+ fucking 1

I don't think most people understand how science works.

how could he says that? I think he lives his life completely with science.. How can he explain the things that science can't? In my own personal insights, I do believe in heaven!

You've convinced us all with your brilliant logic. Carry on, good sir.

And no, I'm not interested in "debating" you. I've found most atheists to be nothing but zealously unlikable airheads who are absolutely sure of nothing but their (nonbelief)-beliefs, while righteously holding the line against those who are supposedly equally zealous.

Scientists are generally not particularly interested in the functions of a soul. But sometimes science and religion overlap. Each then generally puts forth conflicting beliefs on the same topic.

Science is ultimately based on observation of nature. Scientists assume that things happen because of natural causes..

I don't believe in god, but holy shit atheists annoy the fuck out of me.
This.

Athiests and Churchfags are equally annoying. Your beliefs are your fucking business, don't fucking impose them on me.

PS: thread too long, didn't read but I had to chime in.
