Starting a new thread on this to kick around some ideas and possibly get something going.

The idea is to select a charity/non-profit in dire need of a website/internet marketing/social media facelift, and work as a group to give them a kick ass web presence, in order to help them raise awareness for their cause and generate money through donations.

Members of Wickedfire would donate their time/money/services pro-bono. Everyone here is good at something. Let's put our heads and talents together to actually make a difference in the world.

Ideally, we would have organizations apply for their "makeover". We could also take nominations, for example if you knew a local animal shelter who really needed a new site, and knew someone who worked there. Obviously, we would need to come to terms with the business owner, and have them agree that they wanted us working on their site (some sort of contract would need to be created).

This could be a quarterly, yearly, or even monthly project. Once we get a few non-profits under our belt, hopefully word would spread, and we could even get a few actual for-profit customers.

Potential "services" we could offer:
  • Website design/development
  • Hosting
  • Microsites
  • CMS Integration/make it easier for them to manage
  • Innovation/Add new functionality to their site (in the animal shelter example, allow the staff to easily add new pets for adoption, custom widgets, RSS feeds could alert potential owners when new pets are available, etc)
  • Blog and website content (I'm looking at you, copywriters)
  • On-page SEO and keyword research
  • Local SEO
  • Link building (we should probably stick to white hat/article marketing etc, I would stay away from xrumer/blog posts)
  • Set up ways for people to donate money to their organization
  • Social media (FB, Twitter, Digg, Reddit etc)

Things we need to decide:
  • Name of our group/organization
  • Website/portfolio for our group
  • How it all would work/process
  • Legal stuff

So WF, what do you think? Do you has a heart?

I wouldn't mind helping with some of the coding side of stuff. I would prefer to have my hands dipped into the project once the design is in HTML/CSS format. I don't mind converting it into Wordpress and building a plugin to help them manage the pets that need adopting or what have you.

man as I was reading this I was like "I have no time to help with this shit" and then I scrolled down and got sad-face-dogged and crumbled.

It won't take much time if everyone helps out with different aspects. If we work on a dog shelter for example, and you happen to have a pet/dog site, you could take 5 mins and throw a link up on the page. If we do this once a quarter, it wouldn't be much of a lift at all. If we get a few designers willing to help, it would probably be fun for them to collaborate on a site design.

If we have someone working on on-page SEO, a few designers working on a template, a coder or two willing to code to WP, and some copywriters writing content, that handles everything, and nobody should spend more than a couple of hours total.

i have a domain i dont use, sellpets dot net, could be used as a pet adoption site for a non profit. shrug.

I'm in. Can I suggest working in reverse though? Let's find a cause to get behind, then someone can break down all the tasks that need to be done. E.g. Design comp for home page, PSD > XHTML, Implement WP, Write articles about _______ and _______, drop some links to said articles etc. Then we can ask for volunteers for each of those action items.

Perhaps the first website should be for "Wicked Good" or whatever you are going to call this entity. A site explaining what this group is about, what they offer, who can qualify and a way to sign up for consideration. Would be a good 1st run to help bring the process together.

That's how I imagined doing things. We will probably use something like Basecamp to manage all of the tasks.

Depending on the charity, I could probably offer a free vps.

We can do it for more than one.

No United Way, even local ones. Them and the Red Cross are two of the worst. We should keep this to small charities and "forgotten causes"

Wicked Good, brought to you by "Fuck People

I'm in. Content, social media and/or legal. Just PM me or let me know what I can do to help out.

Should we set up a poll to choose the non-profit?

Right, i'm not going to do work for some big massive group that already has plenty of funding. I would rather work with a small group that really needs the help. I also don't mind doing the writing work either. As nvanprooyen suggested, find the organization first, then lets make it happen. :)
