I'm now in University and it's stated that commerical activity is not allowed. I don't know if this includes affiliate marketing, but in perspective this is a real inconvenience. What should i do? I sound really newbish here but i really need help. I know what i want to do with the project i'm starting but i'm not sure if on the campus network people might be able to see my data.

Don't host anything on their network, and don't run any servers on their network. I think that is what they are mainly referring to. Keep your dev sites on your laptop, and upload/download from your server. There should be no problem with that.

I'm staying in university halls and using their internet connection. Is there anyway around this, i don't know much about IT.

Do it and don't worry about it. All you are going to use their connection for is to send stuff to and from your site. The worst that can possibly happy is that they stay stop doing it. I really would not worry about it doing too much if you are not going to be using up a lot of bandwidth.

Yeah go for it - I've done tons of marketing in the past from loads of random place.

Can't see any issues with your Uni unless you start hosting porn or something.

i'd seriously consider not doing anything, the risk is far too great, and with a fucked up attitude like that you're probably doomed to failure anyway.

A window of opportunity sometimes involves a stone.

well if you're really afraid of something happening to you the best bet would be to sign up for a data plan with one of your ISPs...with Iphones and Ipads running amock nowadays you can get a data plan that costs10-20/mth, and you can use it even while you're not on campus!

What's worse: the 10+ guys in your dorm downloading Torrents and other Warez/Music, or you logging into your web host to push berries?

If you're really nervous about it, subscribe to VyprVPN or some other VPN and mask your Internet traffic. Not even the University's ISP can know what you're sending in and out to your computer when you're on a VPN.

Just don't do anything illegal and they won't care...

In my first year at halls I used a vpn to get torrents & xbox live working ... they never found out so it didn't bother them!

It's great having a 40mb connection.

The university only has these terms in case you fuck up so they can't be held responsible, live dangerously.
