As the world becomes more complex and governments everywhere struggle, trust in the internet is more important today than ever.

The internet is our shared space. It helps us connect. It spreads opportunity. It enables us to learn. It gives us a voice. It makes us stronger and safer together.

To keep the internet strong, we need to keep it secure. That's why at Facebook we spend a lot of our energy making our services and the whole internet safer and more secure. We encrypt communications, we use secure protocols for traffic, we encourage people to use multiple factors for authentication and we go out of our way to help fix issues we find in other people's services.

The internet works because most people and companies do the same. We work together to create this secure environment and make our shared space even better for the world.

This is why I've been so confused and frustrated by the repeated reports of the behavior of the US government. When our engineers work tirelessly to improve security, we imagine we're protecting you against criminals, not our own government.

The US government should be the champion for the internet, not a threat. They need to be much more transparent about what they're doing, or otherwise people will believe the worst.

I've called President Obama to express my frustration over the damage the government is creating for all of our future. Unfortunately, it seems like it will take a very long time for true full reform.

So it's up to us -- all of us -- to build the internet we want. Together, we can build a space that is greater and a more important part of the world than anything we have today, but is also safe and secure. I'm committed to seeing this happen, and you can count on Facebook to do our part.

I agree

Fuck him. Facebook has taken on the role of the mainstream media. They ban users and delete posts based on politics (ie gun control)

Facebook is the worst website on the internet to post your "private" information. Do yourself a favor and stop posting on facebook. Delete your personal photo's and your life history.

"Hey Bazza it's Mark... how's it going?"

"Oh hi Mark! Not bad - bit of a problem in Crimea lol but not really our game over here... but... can you tell me where I find my 'friends family pets' page these days?"

"Er... not sure... anyway, how do you feel about me creating world peace?"

"Hmm... not sure... let me see how that would work with ******* shareholders and **** board, and I'd probably best consult the ****** along with the *****"

"Right-Oh! Get back to me when you've got a moment then..."

"Will do Marky... oh by the way - why do you look like a lizard or turtle on your latest avatar? I couldn't help noticing..."

"Ummm...."

It normally takes a politician to say such bullshit with a straight face.

I will say good on him, he will get a lot of people to like facebook with this stunt.

That is a great strategy and very similar to the one employed by Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and the vast majority of the film industry. Take a very politically progressive stance by decrying low taxes, then hire the best accountants to ensure you pay the least amount possible.

Even Obama believed the shit they were spewing and he proposed a minimum 30% income tax on all wealthy individuals a couple of years ago. There were fucking tumbleweeds blowing across that rally.

I don't think Obama 'believed' anything. He said what he needed to say to continue with the same system. He, like all powerful people tend to be, are pragmatists, not idealists. Idealist reasoning tends to be post-hoc.

I would be totally unsurprised if his conversation with Obama went like this:

"Sorry dude, I'm going to have to take a public jab at you to defend my business"

"Np Markie, as long as you keep giving us that data, we will continue to be friends. BTW, do you need any more money? I could call my bosses and ask them to invest more money into FB or even get an analyst to give you a more positive outlook. "

"Nah man, I'm good, I'm not doing this due to cash constraint, but to obtain good will from my products... I mean, users."

"I understand, I'll be going to do the same, I'm reviewing my latest 'inequality speak'"

"Hahahaha, that'll be good."

"Hehehehe, it sure will."

Maybe Obama didn't expect the 30% to be pushed through, but there wasn't even a small win involved. Usually they'll ask for a lot more than what they want or even realistically expect to get, then settle for what they really wanted in the first place. There was zero support from his regular elitist crowd, so it fell completely flat.

Then again, Obama does pay less than 20% in income taxes.

I would not disagree, but this is most likely the rethoric of a corporation approaching state-like powers. So it's more propaganda warfare between states. Happens every day....part of korea says the us is the devil, for the us iran is the devil...etc etc...every state claims moral superiority and in the meantime they lie, steal and cheat... doesn't matter if it's the NSA or a facebook datacenter: The same mechanisms of power are at play here.
