i'm looking to have a site developed with a $5000 budget approx. i'm looking at rentacoder and although i've heard bad things about the quality of programmers on there, i do like the fact that there are ratings/reviews for each programmer, and some have completed 50+ jobs with almost perfect 10 ratings. should I not be going through rentacoder? it seems that finding a good programmer is like finding a needle in a hay stack. i should also mention that my requirements is VERY VERY specific.

should i be concerned with rentacoder and depositing my funds in escrow? i.e. i dont want rentacoder's facilitators to see the job as 'complete' when it isnt, and then forward the funds to the coder when there are still things left unfinished.

i'd be happy to hear your experiences using this site, for again, the development of a big site, not small little tasks.

I would split off a small core part of it and get it developed first to see what the quality is like. Even if you were developing it yourself that's what you'd probably do first.

the question is hard to answer, because also we know about the budget of your project, we know nothing about the nature of the project.

will the site have to be developed from ground-up? have you chosen a particular cms that has to get customized to your needs? have you set a framework for the technologies and standards to be used?

most importantly: have you properly documented your requirements in a form that a developer is able to start working without having to come back to you for every little bit to clarify what you really wanted?

i think, outsourcing is great, if you need a very particular functionality to be added/enhanced to an existing framework. but to get something build from ground up needs imho more of a projectpartner, than a developer for hire.

so, i would most likely not outsource such a project. but i am a friend of rapid development and need the developer sitting at my side, to check every now and then how he is doing and to give him the opportunity to come back at me at every time to check if what he does fits my expectations also.

hi - fortunately the site is already done from a design perspective, and the requirements are very very specific too.

Why not post it on a forum like this in the marketplace? My issue with RAC and the others is that browsing through RFPs, buyers are very unrealistic. On the other side, you are dealing with tons of offshore suppliers with concerns of communication issues, legal differences, and competency. What language are you looking to use?

Post a thread detailing the basics of the project or send me a PM. Myself or someone else on this forum may be able to help you.

The thing is I am looking to hire somebody locally for this project, the site will be in php. I would prefer to meet with them face to face if possible. I've been scrued over before by programmers on message boards and never want to deal with that again.

rendacoder is full of scammers

Here is how these scammers work. You wilst a projuect and a price. Within hours you get an automated reply form some Idian outfit that goes like

(comany name) specializes in (your project). We have best coders and specialize in PHP, PERL, C, C++, Basic ect . Then they give some contact info.

They do this for EVERY listing regardless of the bid. You pay up and get nothing. A complete scam.

Othertimes, you think your getting a good deal but the work is shoddy.

You get what you pay for.

I suggest going to your yellow pages and finding web developers there. You will pay more but since you can visit them in person and oversee the project there is much less likelyhood you will be screwed.

But I would be limiting myself on rentacoder to programmers available locally... and rentacoder doesnt give money to the coder until the job gets completed, so i dont see how that scam would work? I did try going to the yellowpages, in fact, that was my first method, and a lot of the companies around here are lame -> they didnt get back to me when they said they would. what I do like about rentacoder is that at least you can invite people to your view your project details... this way I can pick the people who are top rated on the site. anyway, i haven't joined yet but am seriously considering now.

So are you saying the reviews there are fake? There are lots of developers listed on RAC with positive reviews from buyers, so if your claims about it being a scam are true then the reviews are fake...seems pretty unrealistic.
