Obviously dog training tips is just an example but do you think it would make a big difference by having the hypen between each word or just between the first and second?

In general, if you mean for an exact match keyword domain, then:
* Preference is for no hypens, especially if the site is a brand.
* For a 4 page affiliate mini-site, then hyphens are Ok, if the other non-hyphen TLD's are already registered.

In your example, preference is for dog-training-tips.net.

It's not going to be branded so I will go with the second option thanks.

Eva heard about Keyword proximity and prominence?

Your key phrase is made up of 3 words i.e dog, training & tips
Since you need to club two words as you've limiting yourself to only these two domains. Now clubbing dogtraining sounding more reasonable or trainingtips ?

If we limit ourselves to only these two options. Then, I'd choose dog-trainingtips.net
