wordpress limit authors to x posts per day/week etc

Im looking to limit the number of posts users (authors) can make, eg:

john doe can make 2 new posts a day.

I found a half developed plugin project for this a while ago, and forgot where i found it.

I can write the plugin myself if i new where to start.

Any ideas?

Yeah, i just dont really know where to start. I know how to query a users total post count easy enough, so i could limit their lifetime total posts if i wanted, but im not sure how to approach a daily/weekly/whatever limit.

Run a custom query on your $wpdb->posts table, it's got everything you need: author ID, publish status and the time of last update.
