I'm just about to upgrade to Win 7 RC and I can't find any info on how much data if any will be lost.

I have already made a backup of all important data (files, mails etc) but haven't backed up any programs and games. Will this data get lost, so will the computer need to be formated or is it just an upgrade keeping all programs?

Couldn't really find a clear answer on the Windows page.

Thanks!

RC = release candidate
You definitely should not be trying to upgrade a PC with this as it's only an evaluation. You're going to have to wait like the rest of us til October I do believe to get your hands on Windows 7

I would suggest either a Dual Boot install or a Clean install.

I haven't read too much about trying to upgrade an XP or Vista installation with the Win7 RC.

Maybe check out this site for better answers:

They have been GREAT for Vista and Win7 info, programs, and tweaks.

By the way, I did a clean install of Win7 on my second hard drive and left Vista Ultimate on my other HD. I just shut the computer down and physically change the jumpers from Master and Slave to switch between OS's.

I "RARELY" use my Vista Ultimate anymore. Your Win7 RC will be operational until May 2010.

P.S. Typically if you can just do an upgrade you will not need to reload programs. If you install Win7 and leave your current OS installed (for a dual boot.) you will still need to re-install your programs because Win7 will create it's own new Registry file which will not have the install information from your other programs. They will need to be reinstalled so that they can make their Registry entries into the the new Reg file.

Okay, thanks for the Info.

Well it's for my laptop so changing HD's isn't really a great option. Dual partition might work better. I'll make a 10GB or so partition and install Win7 in there. Reinstalling the programms isn't a big deal but having to back all that shit up would be a pain in the ass.

I went from scratch on a Core2 Sony Vaio laptop. Everything worked just fine for me. (Surprising, really..) I am considering it a main OS right now but I have several machines that I rotate pretty frequently.

I installed it ontop of my Windows Vista and have had no issues at all.

I went to the first Beta of Win 7 then to the release candidate.

Only issues I have is with video drivers right now. Otherwise it runs much better then Vista. Although I found out right before I switched from vista why that os sucks so bad. The searchindex thing goes nuts and slows your system way down.

stick with vista for now and wait till november for the upgrade. the rc is good. but theres a lot more yet to come along.

I just installed Win7 on another partition on my Latitude D620. I'm dual-booting with XP on the other partition. It looks and feels like vista, but is much faster. I haven't played with it much yet, but I will when I get time. (Right...)
