Honest question.

The risk/reward is astronomical.

Time invested in buying domains vs developing sites would be like 1/10.

Cost to buy a .com domain? $10 even if I'm not getting wholesale prices or discounts.

Am I missing something here? Seems like I need to get my ass in the game!! I just found this section of the forum lol.. I had considered domaining in the past but had no sort of guidance and chickened out/forgot.

all the nice / possible / thinkable domain names are already registered.

You have to have deep pockets to get into the game. This is a number game. Even if you have a nice domain (that you think it is), you might not even have a buyer for several years, do you have the patience?

Full time domainers might need to have a large domain portfolio (say 1000+) to have a statistically significant volume of "interest" (read: not sale). That is already 10K in annual reg fee, and from there let's hope that you can cover your cost by selling some nice names.

Or another simpler way is to get some slightly premium names - 3 or 4 character names. Hold on to them, resell them a few years later. The value of these domains will appreciate, but do you have the patience? Money is better spent elsewhere.

Without some bot / script, how do you handle these domains?

And I'm not even touching on dropped names, which those full time domainers are squatting like there is no tomorrow.

Good luck bros.

It's easy to register new or dropped domains.

But where and how are you going to find buyers?

You are about 20-30 years too late. Most $10 domains that are available to be registered, you are going to be lucky to turn around and flip for $40-60. And after listing fee's, payment fees, and the hassle you are going to find it hardly worth your time.

I just found this section of the forum

If it took you three months to read the front page / index then I'd steer clear of looking through lists with more than one page or you won't be profitable until you're about 350 years old!

(I too know relatively little about the murky world of buying and selling domains) ;)

seems easy

but its not

i had an offer once for $750, but i kept it and developed a first page google ranking site instead and sold it for $4500

another time i bought 50 city specific domains and never ever had 1 single offer and not one email was ever returned with interest, in hindsight it was a stupid set of keyword domains.

it's much harder to make money in domaining on reasonable levels than doing aff marketing, seo, etc even if you know what you are doing. you also would need more patience than in 2013 seo game

I have a friend who does domaining at a small level - he buys all those random 4-5 letter gibberish domains and try to sell to others as a domain that can be developed into a brand like most web 2.0s (since most web 2.0s have pretty gibberish and random names too).

From what I see he is making and doing, I don't think its worth the trouble at all. As for trying to pick up branded expiring domains, thats very difficult to do with all the competition thats out there.
