I'm thinking of setting up a forum on my automotive site and was wondering what people think is the best package out there to use. Don't care if it's free or paid, I'm more interested in that's it's good.

Personally I like vBulletin the most. Since its often used on large, active forums, people are used to using it. phpBB and SMF are also great.

If you are thinking long term, and really care about this site you have, go with VBulletin. It costs around $160 plus $35/year for renewal of support/upgrades, but I have never been hacked, the admin backend is amazing, the add-on community is killer, all around excellent. Hands down the best forum package in my opinion.

Yeah, vBulletin is my pick too. The more licenses you purchase, the cheaper it gets. For example, my friend is paying around $20 per vBulletin license now. Jellsoft is really good with security so don't try using a hacked version - they will find you easily with their authentication code and cut you off ;)
