where did you find your designer? i've considered a crowd sourced design for the variety, but would prefer working with an individual.

any thoughts?

Yes. I am a designer and I would be happy to work with you. I am a freelancer and I have a good portfolio to show. Check out my website at Rhondel Wilson and contact me from there if you would like to work with me.

Just post your requirement in buying section, you will get many good providers. But be sure to choose the provider based on his ratings, user reviews etc.

I can recommend a guy named James Rudy. He is seriously the shit. I used him a while back shortly after he graduated from Notre Dame. I have no idea what he charges now, but his stuff is awesome. When I used him he was a little slow on communication, but his designs were more than worth the comm. delays.

Google him. For me he's the first result for James Rudy in Google. If he isn't for you, he's located in New York and this is his linkedin profile.

I honestly have no idea if he does any independent clients anymore, but here is his current portfolio.

I found this guy in Chicago earlier this year. He's cheap, usually a bottle of cheap wine will do, but when the project is more involved I usually take him a happy meal too.

oDesk. There are plenty of designers. Create a job and pick the best one according to your needs. Do not forget to check the feedback.

I found a really good local guy and that tops dealing with people online any day in my book. Same timezone, easy to reach for revisions etc. My $0.02.

Depending on your project I'd be wary of "crowd sourcing".

I had a project I worked on for a while. Registered a domain like meetpeople.com, posted the idea for a "community site" project on some freelancer sites, with drawings of the design, the interactions I wanted between users, etc even hired developers to start building it and bought script packages for much of the functionality.

A month later a website like meet.people.com popped up with my exact fucking layout, interactions, etc only the color scheme was different.

It wasn't meetpeople.com but it was similar for a particular niche of people to meet and interact as a community.
