whats the point of property tax? you buy a house pay it off but still have to pay property tax. thats BS. so after working hard your whole life the gov. takes your house when your old cause they raised the propery tax on your house so you cant afford it.

I feel sorry for people who lose there house after its been paid off or they have to sell it and move somewhere else

I don't know about in the States, but up here Property Tax pays for your neighborhood services such as the City Garbage Guys weekly pickups, the roads/sidewalks maintenance in your direct neighborhood/city, local schools, and other maintenance (landscaping etc.) that is needed in your neighborhood and so on....

I've lived in places where the property tax was 5 figures annually. I understand your position, but property tax hikes are seldom THAT extreme. If you can't afford the coming tax hikes then you shouldn't have bought in that area in the first place (not you specifically, just the general "you"). Plus, increase in property taxes usually coincide with other factors. If there's a new school being built nearby for example, your property taxes might go up. But so does the value of your home. You can always take a loan against the value of your home to cover property taxes, or refinance with property tax figured into the principal.

All that being said, property taxes are what stopped me from buying a nice 3BR condo a few months ago. All the other prices were right, but property tax was almost $8k. The only reason this town keeps the property taxes that high is to keep from being taken over by Newark and their lovely residents. If you've ever seen "New Jersey Drive" or watched an episode of Cops, you know what Newark is like... and it's right next to me.

I don't plan on having children, so imagine how fucked I feel when I look at property taxes!

You don't own your house. Taxes on your property is a lien against it.

Not to mention eminent domain.

People are starting to wise up.

  1. You don't actually own your land.
  2. You can't decide what to put in your body.
  3. You can't decide how much you work for.
Shitty deal, isn't it?

It's amazing how many devices are put into place to keep commoners/plebs/the working class people out of everything worth a damn.

Yah two of my biggest gripes with local & state government are property taxes and eminent domain (now being used for commercial purposes....).

im pretty close to buying a condo, but property taxes and HOA dues are really raising the monthly payment. What do they need $350/mo HOA dues for in a small complex?

If the government wants your shit they will find a way to take it. Property taxes and eminent domain a few of those methods.

my property taxes are currently $11,000/yr up 30% from when i bought the house 1.5 years ago. Let me name some services I DON'T get for that money:

Snow Plowing - My town is mostly private roads. We need to pay to plow the road ourselves.

Sewer - Yea, they dont have any. Septic tanks FTW

Water Hookup - Wells FTW

New York is Total bullshit.

I own a $280,000 house in Omaha and pay $6666 in property taxes.

My parents have a house that they just had custom-built: $410,000. Over 10k in property taxes. House is paid off though, so I guess they have that going for them.

Omaha has some non-cool property taxes.

I'd love to see them go down somehow.

When you pay your property tax, it is paid to the clerk’s office where it is then placed into a special account until it is divided up between school districts, city and townships, and the county. There is a portion of the tax dollars that is directed to other districts, which might include a nursing home owned by the city, county, or something similar that requires tax dollars to operate. Fire, ambulance, parks, libraries, and others receive a portion of the tax dollars as well. How much each group receives is different for every state and community. However, the highest pay goes to the school districts and then the city, county and townships.

So even if you send your kids to private school or don't have kids your footing the bill for other bastards to learn.

Because most of the US believes that educating our young is something that benefits the whole of society.

Honestly, chaining the kids in school until they're 19 might not be such a bad idea.

The rest of the US feels that if you have to breed, then pay for your shitty kids yourself and hire a fucking babysitter instead of bringing the screaming brats to a fucking restaurant full of paying customers on a saturday night.

Sorry, I hate children.

Property and income taxes are legalized theft, pure and simple.

I don't mind a sales tax to provide for local infrastructure, but only with very strict caps and even stricter regulation.

Trouble with taxes is, once the public figures out they can benefit from the largess of the public coffers, they forget who is filling up the trough to begin with and wind up voting to progressively cannibalize themselves. Then it's an exponational explosion of taxes, "necessary" stuff to spend them on ("too big to fail", anyone?), and "necessary" people to administrate their disbursing.

Before you know it, the goobermint is grabbing your house out from under you and looting your bank account, all in the name of taxation.

Fuckers. I say we dump their tea in the fucking harbor.

Schools are merely daycare. Kids don't get educated at school.

I didn't title this, 20/20 did.

From grade 1 to grade 8 or so, I learned a whole lot. After that, I pretty much coasted and learned what I wanted to learn.

The right children, in the right schools with the right teachers, learn a great deal.

I think schools do a better job teaching than many give them credit for. It is quite popular to hate on schools/teachers.

I believe UNMC here in Omaha is considering starting up a "Medical High School." This is pure genius. Schools need to get away from the generalized education that they've been pushing, especially at the higher grades. At the same time, tracking can ruin a kid's life...

Balancing act. I have no solution other than paying top dollar for top educators for my own kids.

Children rock. I have been teaching mine to fight with swords.

My 4-year-old is getting quite good at BF2. I enjoy piloting the attack helicopter while he guns on the computer next to mine.

If my children act up in restaurants, I take them outside and sit with them. They hate that. When we go out to eat with our kids, it is on Thursday at 4:30 PM.

This has very little to do with property taxes.

Tip from my CPA on a recent tax appointment: if your property taxes are going up, but the current market value of your house is going down, you are free to fight the assessment each year and lower your property tax bill. I haven't done this personally because I feel the $1300/yr property tax is about right for the value of the house I purchased several years ago. But I've been monitoring zillow.com and recent home sales in my area. If the downward trend continues in the housing market, I would not have a problem putting up a fight if the assessment gets out of line this coming up year.
