One of my site is currently down and its a pain in the ass cause I feel so helpless. So what's the longest your sites been down and now did you deal with it? DId you drink the pain away? Considered jumping off a bridge perhaps?

2 hours. A shared server was DDOS'd and I lost $500 on ppc. I asked for reimbursement from them since my domain wasn't the target, but they have some clause in their terms to protect themselves from that. Needless to say I had to shift to someone who handles their IT a big better.

The longest for me was probably 24-25 hours way back when I was on shared hosting at Site5. They fucking suck.

Thank god I found WiredTree from one of the threads on here and got a VPS and a dedicated shortly after. I've been with them for over a year now and don't think I've ever experienced any downtime :)

I had a site down for about 2 weeks back in 2001, before I knew the difference between a hosting provider and a reseller. Luckily for me back then sites were more about personal matters than business.

2 Weeks... dreamhost, they had two entire servers down, and support wouldn't get back with me or anyone else for like 2 days at a time, fustrating going back and forth. Thats when I moved my ass off shared hosting for good.

I had 8 blogs making around $30 a day each go out for 2 days. I was dealing with this jerk that never got back to me. I called, phone # was cut off, emailed him, he never got back. Then when monday came around all the sites came back on. I backed everything up and went and found another provider, who wasn't any better towards the end. The problem is these resellers open these share hosting accounts and over sell them. I ended up with a company that offers your own sever at a great rate. I pay $XXX.00 a month, with unlimited space. My server I'm on is backed up every 6 hours on another server. So if my server goes down there's another one that will run my sites. Plus I can sell space to others on my server. It took awhile to get were I'm at now, but I haven't had an outage all year, I love it.

Longest 2-3 hours possible a few months ago. I am using hostgator. Other then that, I have not had any problems so far. No looses happened because my site was new and traffic was less.

I had a shared hosting account server go down completely and when they restored the backups to another server (within a couple of hours), they had a back up of my site that was months old. It took another day and a half to get a back up that was within 24 hours of the downtime restored.

Luckily it was only hosting a private membership site I was still testing and hadn't went live yet.

Lol fuck, jinxed myself. Server down for about an hour now.... -___-"

4 days back when I was running a free hosting site. It needed a new HD and the server techs told me it would only be a 2 hour downtime.

I was talking with a potential purchaser at the time who had made an offer for $25,000 for the site. After all the downtime it killed the value of the site enough that he withdrew his offer and I ended up selling it to him a month later for only $5,000.

15 days... DDOS and mailbombing of a server I was once one. The security was so weak that you could even get root access within 20 minutes. ended up shifting to a new server and thus far all good.

SAME fucking problem with the SAME company. I moved to the planet since, bought a few boxes and never looked back.

I even paid and put in 3 call-backs and nobody ever called me back until the servers were back up.

they offered me like 4 free domain registrations for the pain and suffering, but that still doesnt mean shit.

DOWNTIME SUCKS! :moon:

You know what the worst of it was? They suggested I was using too much reasources, and suggested I try their DreamhostPS (I guess a fake version of a VPS), but the shit I had on DH at the time was only 1% of the stuff I use now. And the best part is, an hour after I switched to DreamhostPS... the server went down for a day.

Im wondering if this happened to you about a year ago? maybe a little less? because now that you mention it, they didnt offer to move me to DreamhostPS, but they did say, "well, we can move you over to our new cluster which is unlimited everything, you shouldnt experience anymore downtime, etc etc, bla bla" which we did, and then went down AGAIN.

dreamhoststatus had like 500 comments from angry people all switching hosts. When it is up and it works, Dreamhost is fantastic. But it is exactly like you said - for spare/test/bullshit hosting, its good to have around, but not to throw anything mission critical on it, because when they DO go down, they really dont give a shit. This was right after I launched an ecommerce site as well :(
