What do you think the conversion rate is from free memberships to paid memberships for online dating sites like match.com, chemistry.com, etc? Anyone have a clue?

Quite low. It's been discussed millions of times (POF?). Most people use it until their trial is up and move on.

Sticking to the big names is likely your best bet in this area. I spent a few weeks meddling with an "adult" type membership offer...it's a tough conversion just to get them to sign up for a paid trial.

That is a pretty general question and there is no way to calculate specific numbers due to the fact that there are so many variables. Also you are asking about the largest general all purpose dating sites out there.

First of all you have to consider the type of traffic you are sending and how you feel it matches up with the particular type of dating site you send to. General traffic sent to an all purpose site will give you the lowest %.

Second since all traffic is different, a dating program that offers multiple categories that best match your traffic should yield a better percentage.
By sending targeted traffic to the best converting front end/landing page of a program with multiple dating categories to promote has proven this.

If you want a number pick anything between .00001% to .33% and you would probably be about right.

Dating sites are really coming up with clever ways to get free members to become paid members. Although sending out fake messages to a new free user from 20 different women is getting to be pretty pathetic :)
Conversions from free to paid user are fairly small but getting that initial sign up is pretty easy.

one site that i send leads to says that 1:20 ratio of subscriptions to free sign ups is considered average quality traffic

Best believe some of these sites, with their $500-25,000 match making programs that users get hammered with via calls and direct mail, make a lot more than most think.

You really have no clue.

Depending on dating site promoted and traffic source you can see anywhere from a 1:6 to 1:50 conversion ratio.

Lol.

Just look at what they're paying you for your leads, and then ask yourself what kind of conversion rate would they need to make that profitable. Simple.

Find an offer that pays per lead and per sale and do the math. If they pay $4/lead and $80/sale then they expect an average ratio of around 1:20.

Our sites convert between 25%-40% from trial to full membership. Some obviously convert better than the others. We've seen as high as 52%.

We payout as high as $100 CPA for full memberships.

I'd be curious to see the numbers involved there (totals).. one in two conversion is pretty bold.

great read. also I loled @ this comment

eharmony was even worse. After going through their “patented questionnaire” and spending over an hour carefully thinking over questions and giving detailed and truthful responses, I got directed the wonderful page that declared that I was in their 20% demographic of people they did not want on their site. Great.
