What is the best wireless router?

i used linksys and wasn't satisfied at all. I am now using D-link, it's much better, but still can't say it's the best

Get a $300+ Cisco small biz router and program the ios yourself...a very fun project I did recently and do not regret!

I've used the AirPort Extreme Base Station for the last few years... pricey, but one of the most stable wireless routers I've ever used.

Just recently redid my network because of the modem comcast gives me has a built in switch/router and I have a large area to cover, put in a couple netgear switches and was about to get a high end netgear AP, but then decided to go with the Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme was about 100 bucks cheaper, and I like it a lot, It covers My entire house, three stories, and my brothers house too (which happens to be the house right next to mine). I never really thought these could possibly be worth the money... ...until I owned one. I'd say it's totally worth the extra 50-80 bucks for this.

No down time or anything, extremely fast and handles high volumes of bandwidth, internet and local, and extremely easy setup too. Another nice thing is you can plug external hard drives into it, which makes wireless time machine backups and I have frequent backups now. Also acts as a NAS for other files.

My opinion might be different than most, but I find with Wifi routers your best bet is to buy the absolute cheapest you can and just replace it when it becomes problematic.. rather than overpaying for something that will eventually start crapping out but being $250 into it and feeling attached and wasting a bunch of time and frustration with it.

That's my opinion anyway.

ok but for real cisco / linksys e4200. its a fucking beast. its got so much awesome built in to the firmware i didn't even have to flash ddwrt on it. $160 shipped on amazon.

Looking at the airport extreme, but it looks like you can't change the mac address on it? If so thats a serious downside.

I'll tell you this. My damn Linksys WRT54G won't let me adjust the TCP connections. So anything running more than a few threads (Megapinger, proxyfinder) just crash my router out. Had to bust it back out since getting business class net. I had a bad ass Motorola modem/router combo. I miss it already.
