Also whch extensions are allowed in a Domain name ?

.ca etc.

What are the valid characters for a domain name and how long can it be ?

There are tons of tlds or the end part. .com .net .info .country.... Some country codes you need to have a local address in that country or show a company trademark that you are using in that country.

Go to namecheap and try to register a domain. Type anything and it will show you the alternates that mosr people can buy.

Some others are more difficult like .edu or .gov You have to be a school or a branch of the govt to get them.

BTW I think .com is best if you can find one you like at all.
