What do all of you experts think about The Planet for dedicated managed servers?

Thanks

They're good across the board, uptime, network quality, support, good value for the money in most cases. Ironically the bargain bin deals are horrible, you pay a little less for a crappy server and get really shafted on bandwidth. Their RTG's are really ready to go very quickly, and another advantage of the RTGs is if you have a problem with yours they can replace it really fast.

Are the dedis managed? I really want a fully managed solution.

I think they split the company into two different departments (maybe even datacenters)... You'll want to go to the "northstar" site (I think that's what it's called). But they upped all of their prices and now you have to request a quote.

And as long as their datacenters aren't exploding, they're okay.

I use both ThePlanet and SoftLayer. Both are good, but I've had one main server at ThePlanet for over 6 years and can't recall ever dealing with outages, despite the fire they had earlier this year. Guess I was lucky. Either way, they've been good to me, even through the change in their ownership and what not.

I would use Softlayer over The Planet. Where I used to work we had some servers at The Planet and because switch or something went down our servers were unreachable for several hours. I use Softlayer and like them.

And if I remember correctly the 2-3 outages they've had in the last 2 years besides that.

They had a massive explosion in an electrical vault that blew out walls and shit in one of their datacenters (I think they have 3). One of our servers was affected, but they offered solutions during the outage, and then gave us two months of credit. Given the extreme nature of the outage, I think they handled it quite well.

Otherwise we haven't had any issues with them and have had a box there (with upgrades along the way) for at least 6 years.

That being said, we have had excellent service from Singlehop, NetNation and iWeb as well.
