I'm pretty much a newbie too, what I do is read around a lot. This forum has good stuff. And when you're not sure about something and you can't find it, just ask.
Something that you're already familiar with, or an expert at. Whatever hobby you have.
There's a million idiot sites devoted to "online marketing" started by folks thinking they're going to get rich, but unfortunately don't have any experience doing so.
If you don't have a technical background, or even basic HTML than start with an off the shelf blogging type site (i.e., blogger.com).
Just start doing it and don't worry about making mistakes. The only mistake that you can make is not doing anything.

How Noob r u? If you are brand new start by building some sites around things that interest you and use them to learn html, css, php, and mysql. Also start a blog with a program like drupal or wordpress and learn how to use them and the many plugins available. Once you have that stuff down work on learning basic seo stuff and PPC. Then work on making money off the site with adsense, ypn, and or affiliate offers. Thats just some basic stuff to get you started and remember to keep testing and trying new things that is really the key to success IMHO
As a beginner, Adsense is a good route to go. You can dive on in and do affiliate stuff too, and probably make more money, but its a little more tricky.
My first commercial site was a game review site. I made pages for about 200 PC games, took me all summer. Site only ended up making about $10 a day, so in some respects in was a disaster. However, you can really learn a ton about internet marketing and SEO just through building a content site. It may make a pitance compared to other stuff, but its kind of like going to pre-school.
With that first site I learned about SEO, PPC affiliate marketing (I was running campaigns in the beginning, complete flop), getting backlinks on small & large sites, Adsense optimization, etc. And it gave me a good launching point for new sites.
If you go straight in to PPC arbitrage or affiliate marketing you will probably miss out on a lot of that stuff. Then again, you can learn it later.
#1 recommendation for newbies is work long and hard. If you are ready to work for the next year and half, 7 days a week, pennies an hour, you can make it big. That means you also have to enjoy doing it.

I agree with Andrew. While there is a lot to be learned, I would start with a content site. I learned a ton going through that process that I now apply in other areas, and has made my entry into affiliate marketing significantly less painful, and profitable from day 1. Conversely, I have learned a lot by getting into affiliate marketing that helps me on the content side. I would just go that route to begin with.

I hope this proves to be true, I have been bustin my ass for about 8 months now, working for scraps, although I make much more now then I did when I started, it aint big by any meens!! I want 5 figures a month!
