Friend of a friend needs a web site done for their biz and she gave me their number. This stuff isn't really my forte but I can use the money so if they give me the job, I'll take it.

My question is, what would you charge a client to get a PSD and coding done for a simple Wordpress site? We're talking 5 basic pages with an email form.

Also, what should it cost me for PSD and coding to farm this out to India and get it all done?

First of all I wouldn't farm it out to India, I would do the Philippines bro. It will probably cost you about $500 and you should charge at least $1,500 for the headache it's going to be. Personally, I wouldn't charge less than $5k but it's your call.

Unless his client is a big corporation, there's no way they'll pay $5k for this.

I personally would charge 1.5k-2k and I would outsource the whole thing. (not even to India)

Hire a designer to design a custom PSD layout for them with logo and shit: $300-$500 (They're a dime a dozen)

Hire psd2html.com to convert the design into a WP theme: $200 I believe.

then at the end tell them that they will get hacked if they dont keep their WP and plugins up to date, and charge them an additional $300 a month for updating their WP core & plugins and backing up their website weekly. There are tons of plugins that do this easily too lol.

What I normally do for offline clients is get a detailed project explanation then post it on Elance. Then charge the clients 3x the bid. I used to do 2x but you need the extra buffer for when the clients change their minds and stuff, increasing your costs.

Thank for the input. Any suggestions (other than Elance) on where to find good designers that come relatively cheap?

Also, do you usually charge the client 50% up front or something else?

Hire web designer | Web 2.0 design company | PSD website design

I liked the look of these when I was looking to get a PSD done a while ago.. although haven't used them so can't vouch for the service..

Dont. I looked into them too - the portfolio looks way better than what they can actually do. Would NEVER use them.

Fiver: You want to be marking up at least 100% if not more. Get the 50% up front as downpayment (or whatever is required to cover your costs).

Some sales questions:

if your client asks who will be doing the designing/coding, do you usually lie and tell them they're American workers (maybe working for you) to justify the high price to the client? And what if they ask about cheaper, overseas labor?

Your team will be doing the work and if they are asking so many questions regarding who is doing it and why it is so expensive it will not end up being worth your time. Every time I decide to take on client work I regret the decision. Tell them to find cheap over seas labor and see how successful they are with reaching the goals they have for a web site. Based on what you have asked, you will be doing way more work than you think so if you decide to go through with it make sure you charge enough.

it will not cost you much as every body said.Just get a domain, ask your hosting provider to install wordpress for you, they will do it for free or there are lot of tutorials on youtube .you can do it watching video.Upload a theme you like (they are lot of free themes available on internet).Follow the steps ,it will save you lot of money. It is simple ,not complicated as you think.i myself did it when i was noob at wordpress 6-7 years back and saved money

The PI is cheaper alright but I've never found a firm or freelancer over there who actually does good design work. I've tried Elance and similar sites and the quality is no better than what I've found on my own. Can you recommend a reputable firm over there who does quality work?

Just use a free template. There are tons out there and a few modifications and it will be perfect.

Get a bunch of logos on fiverr so they feel like they have a 'huge selection'. Brag about that you have 4 designers working remotely (and get it from 4 different designers) Get a video done on fiver so they feel like they 'a/v material'.

Charging $1.5k for a site and spending $500... lol. If you have dealt with psd2html.com (I have) and clients (I have), you will know that you will likely need to spend dozens of hours working on it. Those guys at psd2 ask a ton of questions, they don't get it right at first; etc. @ $1k, and after taxes, you would be working for $10-20/hour. You have to do better than that. If not; just get a regular job where you earn that and don't have to deal with the stress of free lancing.

Figure a way to make it profitable where it can be scalable in the sense that you can eventually hire competent employees (in first world that starts @ $4k/month; where I am; $2k/month) who can handle complex situations.

And if the guy can't afford it; move on. There are people out there that can; just find them and you won't have be diddling with guys who think a few grand is 'a huge amount of money'. Too many people see themselves as being worth only '$xxxx/month' and charge accordingly. You are worth what you make yourself.

Why wouldn't you just get a WordPress theme and set it up/fill it out for them for $50 instead of spending $500? You can pay someone to set the sites up for you, pay to have a logo done or use their existing one if they have one, and they'll be thrilled for anywhere between $500 and $2,000.

I've customized them and added lead capture forms and lead systems for businesses and been able to charge more as well. If you don't have that knowledge a lot of plugins have developer licenses that you can purchase to include with the theme when you sell.

Long story short: Just use a WordPress theme. You can charge them monthly afterwards to take care of the blog beacuse god knows they won't update it, and more importantly, it's cheap and easily ousourcable.
