I think I will do a demographic survery on the registration page of a new site. What demographic information should I be trying to collect, what do advertisers want/expect?

You can never have too much information.

Start with the basics:

- Gender
- Age
- Geo-location (you can do this programmatically, rather than with a survey)

If you can provide more information go for things like:

- Household income
- Education level
- At work users
- % that buy online
- Internet savviness, possibly

Depending on your site but if its not offering a service of some kind i would go with the survery via a newsletter sometime after they have registered, just to make the registration as simple as possible. Thats probably just me though. Maybe things like Gender Age Location Income Online spending Recent online purchases Interests
