What are the advantages of Affiliate link cloaking ?

Heey All,

I've seen many topics come by about how to clock you're affiliate links, but none of them has actually learned me why to do it. Recently, I started thinking that maybe it will help with your adwords landing page quality score, but on the other hand I find that very hard to believe.

So tell me guys, why do you wanna do this. And does it have a downside to it ?
 


Because smart people can remove your affiliate id fom the link so you don't get paid, or they can replace it with their own.
Malware etc can replace your id with it's own id.
People don't like to click ads, and the url is one way to see if it is an ad.
Can help quality score I think.

So you have definately seen improvements in conversions by doing so ?

I think it helps quality score a little bit, google bots seem to like inbound links, so by making a link look inbound, it might give you a small advantage
 
Google adwords does not like seeing affilite links, so it effects your quality score if you do not mask them. Yahoo and MSN dont care... from my experience.
 
So is there a special way to mask this to make it invisible for the adwords bot, or does regular redirecting do the trick ?
 
You would want to use a PHP redirect. Search the forum for it. There is a tutorial around here somewhere
 
a visitor will probably prefer to click on a link like yourdomain.com/free-car-quote than something like affiliate-network.com/45456453432
 
cloaking is for protection from people who hijack (steal) commissions and those who like to bypass (not order from you). However, can't you just go to your domain hoster, such as godaddy, and it have it "masked". Are "masking" & "cloaking" the same thing?

Trust
Tracking - this is most important in my book. You can track as much as you want about every outgoing click.
Hiding referrer from affiliate company

The advantages are endless, there is really no debate.
