I have read that the affiliate should not attempt to sell, but rather should pre-sell. My interpretation of pre-selling is that the affiliate should give a positive introduction to the product so that the merchant will basically be selling to a warm market. What are some effective pre-selling strategies?

Tell what they could get out of buying the product and how it can benefit them and their business, explain to them why they need to purchase the product

Thanks for the advice. Your description sounds more like selling which makes more sense to me than the pre-selling approach. You want to do whatever is going to increase your clickthrough rate and hopefully influence the conversion rate on the merchant's site. The pre-selling seems too weak.

The merchants have been doing this for many years, they've got it down.

The best presell for me is a very casual, description of my own experience
with the product. In a tone where I do not care if the reader buys it or not.
The purpose is just that I wanted to share my experience with it. Like, maybe
I'm happy cuz I lost weight or regained my hair, or built up my abs, or
whatever and I wanna tell the world.

imo,

Yes, it can be a fine line between pre-selling and selling. Like Bompa says, I think coming at your preselling from a review type of tone like, 'hey, here's the good, bad and the ugly from my experience/opinion' works really good. Of course you have a lot of bogus reviews so people can be wary of reviews. If you can buy the item to really give a heartfelt review, that would be great - but not always possible.

A good pre-selling method is to inform.
Putting into the user's shoes, will give you an idea of what you are looking for.
For example you look into the IM niche becayse you need information.
The same thing with any niche.
Jut inform, talk in a friendly manner, and using words that sell, or call to action here and there but not too saturated.

Regards.
